St Francis of Assisi was a unique spiritual personality who gave up a life of wealth and social position to embrace a life of poverty and chastity. He is the founder of the Franciscan orders of the Friars Minor (Ordo Fratrum Minorum), the women’s Order of St. Clare (the Poor Clares), and the lay Third Order. He was also a leader of the movement of evangelical poverty in the early 13th century. St Francis is considered one of the greatest saints in the Christian tradition and an example of a life lived in imitation of Jesus Christ. He is also known as the patron saint of animals, the environment and one of the two patrons of Italy.

"Holy Saint Francis, through your kind intercession we seek holiness above all things. We seek the faith, hope and love that allowed you to joyfully renounce the pleasures of earthly life and to radically follow our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen."

Generations of Catholics have admired this young saint, called her the "Little Flower", and found in her short life more inspiration for their own lives than in volumes by theologians. Yet Therese died when she was 24, after having lived as cloistered Carmelite for less than ten years. She never went on missions, never founded a religious order, never performed great works.

Thérèse has much to teach our age of the image, the appearance, the “self.” We have become a dangerously self-conscious people, painfully aware of the need to be fulfilled, yet knowing we are not. Thérèse, like so many saints, sought to serve others, to do something outside herself, to forget herself in quiet acts of love. She is one of the great examples of the gospel paradox that we gain our life by losing it, and that the seed that falls to the ground must die in order to live.

"St. Therese, help me to always believe, As you did, In God's great love for me, So that I might imitate your "Little Way" each day. Amen."

Mary was born to be the mother of the Savior of the world, the spiritual mother of all men, and the holiest of God's creatures. Because of her Son's infinite merits, she was conceived and born immaculate and full of grace. Through her, Queen of heaven and of earth, all grace is given to men. Through her, by the will of the Trinity, the unbelieving receive the gift of faith; the afflicted are tendered the works of mercy; and the members of Christ grow in likeness of their Head. In Mary all human nature is exalted. We rejoice in her birthday, as the Church has done from the earliest times.

"Let us celebrate with joy the birth of the Virgin Mary, of whom was born the Sun of Justice.... Her birth constitutes the hope and the light of salvation for the whole world.... Her image is light for the whole Christian people.."

St. Lawrence Justinian was a canon regular who became the first Patriarch of Venice. He was admired by his fellows for his poverty, mortification, and fervency of prayer. He was a noted preacher of faith and a writer on mystical contemplation.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta:

A virgin hermit of the 12th century, St. Rosalia emerged as one of the best known and most venerated saints in Christianity, especially in Sicily. She left her life in Palermo to live alone in the mountains practicing penitential acts so as to live in closer communion with God.

St Rose of Viterbo had a great desire to pray and to aid the poor, even as a child. While still very young, she began a life of penance in her parents’ house. She was as generous to the poor as she was strict with herself. At the age of 10, she became a Secular Franciscan and soon began preaching in the streets about sin and the sufferings of Jesus. She is the patron saint of florists and flower growers.

"Dear St Rosalia, you rejected the world to live for Jesus. Remind me to put aside solitary time to meditate on Lord and welcome Him into my heart. Amen."

St. Giles left his native country and retired into solitude to escape the notice and applause of the world, and served God as a recluse. In Germany, Giles was included among the so-called 14 Holy Helpers, a popular group of saints to whom people prayed, especially for recovery from disease, and for strength at the hour of death. He is the patron saint of Beggars, The Disabled, Disasters, The Poor.

"O God, we beseech Thee to grant us through the merits and intercession of St. Giles to flee from the vanity and praise of this world, to avoid carefully all occasions of sin, to cleanse our hearts from all wickedness by a sincere confession, to leave this world in Thy love and rich in good works, and to find Thee gracious on the day of judgment. St Raymond was delivered by a caesarean operation when his mother died in childbirth. Hence his name non natus (not born). He joined the Mercedarians under St Peter Nolasco at Barcelona. He succeeded Peter as chief ransomer and went to Algeria to ransom slaves. Raymond remained as hostage for several slaves when his money ran out and was sentenced to be impaled when the governor learned that he had converted several Mohammedans. He is the patron saint of expectant mothers and midwives because of the nature of his own birth.

"Glorious St. Raymond, filled with compassion for those who invoke thee and with love for those who suffer heavily leaden with the weight of my troubles, I cast myself at thy feet and humbly beg of thee to take the present affair which I recommend to thee under thy special protection. Vouchsafe to recommend it to the Blessed Virgin Mary and lay it before the Throne of Jesus, so that He may bring it to a happy issue. Cease not to intercede for me until my request is granted. Above all obtain for me the grace of one day beholding my God face to Face, and with thee and Mary and the saints praising and blessing to all eternity. Amen. Good St. Raymond, pray for us and obtain our request."

St Fiacre, miracle worker, monastery founder, and patron saint of gardeners and cab drivers. Through a simple life of solitude, St Fiacre brought many to the Lord, as his hermitage became a place of pilgrimage, miraculous healings, and spiritual guidance and direction. St Fiacre reminds us to look for the Lord in all we do, and to find Him in the beauty that surround us. He is the patron saint of gardeners and taxi drivers.

St. Euphrasia of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a Sister of the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel. For almost 48 years the convent of St Mary at Ollur was home to Mother Euphrasia. Observing her life of prayer and holiness, the local people called her "Praying Mother", and her Sisters in community referred to her as the "Mobile Tabernacle", because the divine presence she kept within her radiated to all she encountered.

Today, we remember the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist. It is John the Baptist who has pointed the way to Christ. John’s life and death were a giving over of self for God and other people. His simple style of life was one of complete detachment from earthly possessions. His heart was centered on God and the call that he heard from the Spirit of God speaking to his heart. Confident of God’s grace, he had the courage to speak words of condemnation, repentance, and salvation.
