Pope Leo XIV wishes Americans ‘Happy Thanksgiving’ as he greets journalists traveling with him aboard the papal plane bound for Ankara at the start of his Apostolic Journey to Türkiye.

Several reporters offered him various gifts, including a pumpkin pie (a traditional dessert at Thanksgiving dinners), prints of the new ‘Leo from Chicago’ documentary, and Chicago White Sox-themed house slippers.

In brief remarks, the Pope thanked them for their service to the Church.

“To the Americans here: Happy Thanksgiving!” said the American Pope. “It’s a wonderful day to celebrate. And I want to begin by saying thank you to each and every one of you for the service that you offer to the Vatican, to the Holy See, to my person, but also to the whole world.”

More than 15,000 young people met Pope Leo XIV via video link on Friday, November 21, 2025, while attending the National Conference of Catholic Youth (NCYC) in the US city of Indianapolis.

Moderated by Katie Prejan McGrady, the event featured six young Catholics who asked the Pope to share their views on topics ranging from the sacraments and mental health to artificial intelligence and the future of the Church.

In his opening address, Lion XIV praised young Americans for taking the time to meet in person and encouraged them to be active members of their parish communities.

Moments ago, at the grounds in front of the Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom, Vallarpadam (India), Pope Leo XIV, through his representative Cardinal Sebastian Francis, Bishop of Penang, Malaysia, beatified:

Bl. Eliswa Vakayil (1831-1913), founder of the Congregation of the Third Order of Discalced Carmelite Sisters (now the Teresian Carmelites),

And according to the Litteræ Apostolicæ, dated October 7 and coinciding with the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, it states that her feast day will be celebrated every year on July 18, the day of her “birth into eternal life.”

Pope Leo XIV presided at a Requiem Mass for the late Pope Francis and Cardinals and Bishops who have died over the past year, praying that their souls “might be washed from every stain” and that they may “shine like stars in the sky.”

Although we are saddened by the death of loved ones, and even scandalized at the death of innocents “carried off by illness, or worse, by human violence,” the Pope explained, Christians nonetheless continue to hope.

It is this “new Paschal hope,” he said, that Pope Francis, as well as the Cardinals and Bishops who have died throughout the year, “lived, witnessed, and taught.”

🕯️ “Death is a hope for the future.” — Pope Leo XIV 🕯️

Pope Leo XIV presided over the Holy Mass for All Souls’ Day at Rome’s Verano Cemetery. The Holy Father invited the faithful to contemplate death “not so much as a recollection of the past, but above all as a hope for the future.”

His words remind us that in Christ, death is not the end — it is the beginning of eternal life. Every soul we remember with love is held in the mercy of God, who turns our mourning into peace and our longing into hope.

Let us continue to pray for the souls of the faithful departed, trusting that love never dies and that one day, by God’s grace, we shall all be united in His eternal light.
