- LONDON
Every year a wave of orange rises along the shores of the universe defying all human injustices and social vices. This is VAISAKHI - the Birth of The Khalsa.
Vaisakhi was celebrated as a time of spiritual congregation at the time of Sri Guru Amardas Jee (1479-1574) and marks the discovery of the sacred pool (Sarovar) at Amritsar. In 1699 Sri Guru Gobind Singh Jee blessed humanity with Khandey-Kee-Pahul on Vaisakhi day changing the course of Human History. It was on this day that the Tenth Master promised to sacrifice the lives of his entire family and took Amrit himself. Since then Vaisakhi has been celebrated as a day of:
'Gur Sangat Keenee Khalsa'
A Day of The Guru's Sangat for the Khalsa
(Bhai Gurdas Singh Jee Vaar '41')
In Punjab there is not one but many harvesting festivals for the farming community according to different crops. Vaisakhi has been wrongly labelled as an exclusively cultural festival for Punjabi Jatts. Sikhi is anti-caste and has a spiritual message for the universe.
Shamefully, alcohol has become synonymous with 'Punjabi Culture' and as a result the youth of Punjab has become addicted to drugs. Recently, a campaign to associate dancing to this holy festival for Sikhs has threatened the sanctity of the celebrations. Sikhi is a religion of Respect and Modesty - we don't want to see our daughters and sisters dancing to entertain crowds:
'Even the greatest of sinners has shame of Daughters and Sisters'
(Vaar 35, Pauri 4)
Instead, in the spirit of the Saint-Soldier ethos of the Khalsa - Sikh Music and Martial Arts should be displayed. We should look to have exhibitions of the sacrifices and bravery of the Khalsa in honour of the Guru who blessed us on Vaisakhi Day. Sacrifice and Spirituality is our culture not Bhangra and Booze.
We hope we can fix the lens on Vaisakhi for the Mayor or London, Sikhs and Non-Sikhs alike. Please email : [email protected]
