God is Holy; God is Love

Can God be both Holy and loving?

Do idols belong in the temple of God? We are the temple of the living God, as God himself says, ‘I will live with these people and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.’ The Lord also says, ‘Leave them and stay away! Don’t touch anything that isn’t clean. Then I will welcome you and be your Father. You will be my sons and my daughters, as surely as I am God, the All-Powerful.’
2 Corinthians 6:16-18

Many say God’s holiness makes him judgmental, demanding a very high moral standard. Others say if God is loving, then he won’t condemn anyone but all will go to Heaven. Are God’s holiness and love opposite extremes?
God’s Holiness

“This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all.” (1 John 1:5).

Holiness (pictured here as light) is God’s nature. It unifies all his other characteristics. He is perfectly good, perfectly righteous, perfectly merciful, perfectly faithful, etc. All of his actions are determined by this purity that sets him apart from all others. “By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.” (Leviticus 10:3)

"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty. The whole earth is filled with his glory!” (Isaiah 6:3)
God’s Purity

It is in the presence of God’s pure, holy light that we become aware of our sin. Isaiah said, “I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips...” (Isaiah 6:5) Even our good deeds are filthy compared to the purity of God’s holiness. (Isaiah 64:6, Romans 3:23) God does not judge sin out of cruelty: “...His eyes are too pure to look on evil or tolerate wrongdoing.” (Habakkuk 1:13) Yet, the holy mercy and love of God provided a way for Isaiah to be purified (Isaiah 6:6-7) and he does the same for us.
God’s Holy Love

“Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:7-8).

Selfish motives and wrong thinking limit human love. Real love doesn’t tolerate selfish, hurtful behavior. God is pure love! (1John 4:10,16; 1 Corinthians 13:4-7) He desires holiness for his children: He wants us to be completely set apart for Him. What parent does not wish for a “perfect” life for their child? We lack the understanding and power to give that, but God does not. God wants to give us a new life, free from sin. (2 Corinthians 5:17-21)

God’s holiness does not limit or oppose his love; it defines it! “Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.” (1 John 4:18) Are you experiencing this perfect, holy love?
Pray this week:

God, please help me experience the reality of your Holiness and understand my need for your Perfect Love. Please purify me.

Prayer

Is prayer different from normal conversation?

When we pray, why do we use words like amen, blessing, and confession? Do such terms make prayer more effective? Is prayer different from normal conversation? What is the gist of prayer, anyway?

It’s important for every believer to have a good understanding of the action and purpose of prayer. How? The best way to start is by simply defining terms in the Bible that relate to prayer.

CALL

No matter what family you come from or what occupation you hold, God calls you to know, love, and follow his Son. It’s an invitation you don’t want to refuse! We also can call on God when we don’t have the answers, when we’re hurting, or when we’re scared. God promises to answer us when we call on him.

PRAY

Prayer, simply put, is talking to God. It is telling him our concerns, confessing our sins and thanking him for what he’s done. When Jesus Christ was on the earth, he always took time out to talk to God the Father. If the Son of God himself needed to pray, how much more do we? If we don’t know how to pray for a certain situation, we know that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, giving words to what we cannot express. In those times when it seems like God isn’t listening, we need to keep praying. Why? Scripture tells us that God is close to us when we pray and is always listening to what we say.

ASK

To ask means to call on or request. How can we ask? Pray! Again, prayer is talking with God. We don’t have to sit a certain way or be in a certain place in order to pray. When Jesus was questioned about how requests should be made to God, he used a parable—a type of story—to explain that God wants us to continually approach him through prayer (Luke 11:1–10). He wants to hear our voices and delights to answer our prayers!

BLESSED

When the Bible talks about blessing someone, it generally means giving good things that result in a state of happiness. Sometimes these blessings are material possessions, but more often they are intangible gifts such as love, faith and peace. God has blessed us with peace and an intimate relationship with Him.
CONFESS

According to Scripture, we should confess our sin, admitting that we have done wrong. And we should also confess that Jesus Christ is God’s Son, who died for our sin, came back to life, and is now in heaven with God. God has promised that if a person unashamedly admits, or confesses, the truth of Jesus Christ, then God will forgive our sin. Because we’re human, we will continue to sin. The way to keep a clean slate with God is to continue to confess our sins and thank him for his forgiveness (1 John 1:9).

RENEW

God has the awesome power to erase the scars that sin and pain have left in our hearts. In fact, the Bible says that when Jesus Christ comes into our lives, we become new creations without any spiritual blemishes. The Bible says that inwardly our souls are being renewed day by day. Even when we sin, God renews our intimate relationship with him if we confess our sin and turn back to him. Sometimes we may feel as if we have wandered so far from God that we can never go back. But because of God’s incredible grace, he is able to restore our souls and make us even stronger than we were before.

IMITATE

Living the Christian life includes looking to the original, Jesus Christ. If we are to imitate Jesus Christ—to strive to be like him—we must not only study his life, but also find godly mentors to imitate. Although we cannot see God himself, we can see him in other dedicated Christians. They can be a source of encouragement and can point our lives in the right direction. Pray and use wisdom when choosing a mentor.

DEDICATE

To dedicate or devote something is to give completely, without holding back. Christians give their time, energy, possessions—their lives—completely to God in their desire to show him that he means more to them than anything else in this world. When we dedicate something to God, we are not to ask for it back. He wants us to carefully consider what we dedicate to him.

COUNSEL

You have no idea what to do. You need advice! Now what? God gives several avenues for counsel. First, he gives himself. Jesus Christ is called the “Wonderful Counselor” (Isaiah 9:6). We can—and should—bring all our questions and problems to him. He promises to give wisdom every time we ask for it (James 1:5–6). He may provide that wisdom through the Bible (Psalm 119:24), through circumstances, or through other people.

REFUGE

We know that God has promised to be our refuge—our protection. He hasn’t promised a troublefree life. If that were the case, we wouldn’t need a shelter. But God gives us peace and the assurance of his love and presence in our lives even during difficult circumstances. The protection God offers is protection for our souls.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge can fill up a person’s mind, but the beginning of true knowledge and wisdom is the fear of the Lord—understanding God and seeking to conform our lives to his. Knowledge is a good beginning, but wisdom is the application of knowledge to life. It is the skill of living sensibly. Knowledge is not wisdom until it is tapped into and acted upon.

ZEAL

Have you ever been carried away by passion for a cause? When you are so moved, you can hardly sit still; you just want to go out and do something—that’s zeal. As with all positive attributes, God is also our model for zeal. It is because of his zeal for righteousness that God must punish sin. It is because of God’s passionate love for people that he made the ultimate sacrifice to draw us to himself. We should have the same unquenchable drive for the things that God desires. If we are faithful in studying God’s Word and letting his Spirit interpret it for us, God will give us a passion for the things he loves.

KNEEL

Kneeling is an old, traditional gesture of reverence. This position is still appropriate to show fear of and reverence to God. The book of Psalms says we should kneel before the Lord our Maker while worshiping him, physically recognizing his superiority over us. Kneeling is sometimes done during prayer as an expression of humility while talking to the almighty God. Sometime in the future, the Bible says that everyone—even those who refused to follow the Lord—will kneel before Jesus Christ and acknowledge that he is God, finally giving him the total worship he deserves.

AMEN

This word can be an answer or a word of praise. In the book of Revelation, Jesus is described as “the Amen” (Revelation 3:14). He is the answer to all of God’s promises. Jesus is the final word, and it is through his intercession and his name that we pray to the Father. That’s the reason we say “Amen” after we pray. We end our prayers with this affirmation o say, in essence, “Yes, this is what I believe; so be it.”

Prayer to Accept Christ as Savior and Lord

You can accept the free gift given to us by Jesus by praying to Him

He offers that relationship freely and lovingly. "Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God..." (John 1:12). Just like any free gift, you must receive it for it to be really yours.
How do you receive the free gift of Jesus Christ?

"Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved..." (Acts 16:31). We can receive Jesus Christ by personally inviting Him into our lives. Jesus said "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in..." (Revelation 3:20).
If you would like to accept Jesus' free gift and become a child of God, you can pray this prayer now.

"Lord Jesus, I need you. Thank you for dying on the cross to pay the penalty for my sins. I ask forgiveness for my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Thank you for giving me the gift of eternal life. I want to turn and live a new life with you as my Lord and Savior. Thank you, Jesus. Amen."

If you prayed this prayer to receive Jesus Christ as your Savior, congratulations! When you sincerely ask Jesus Christ to be your Savior, He comes into your life spiritually, and you become a child of God. "And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life." (1 John 5:11-12). You may or may not feel any difference right away, but if you truly have asked Christ to be your Savior, your sins are forgiven and you are a child of God.

Does God Really Hear My Prayers?
Does it sometimes feel like your prayers are not making it past the ceiling? How can we be sure God is listening?

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7

God is Trustworthy

Does it sometimes feel like your prayers are not making it past the ceiling? How can we be sure God is listening? God answers prayer in many ways, and this series will discuss some of those ways.
God Might Say “Wait”

When we want something, we want it now! But God does not always work that way; in fact, He instructs His people, “Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for Him to act” (Psalm 37:7). We do not know what God is doing “behind the scenes,” but you can trust that He is working things out for His purpose and our good. Remember, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Psalm 40:4).
God Might Say “No”

In Matthew 19:26, Jesus says "With God all things are possible." Even though God can do anything, it doesn’t mean he will. God has a special plan for each of us. What you ask of God may seem like a humble request that will honor him, but maybe it isn’t in His plan for your life. You might be a faithful follower of Christ and you’re praying for God to take away something that gives you pain and suffering. God knows if the trial you are going through will result in an amazing testimony. That testimony might cause many others to believe in Christ. Remember, God may have a purpose for your pain. God can see the bigger picture and, as a result, God may say no to your prayer.
Trust and Hope

God has promised His people that “He will neither fail you nor abandon you” (Deuteronomy 31:6). It might seem like He is ignoring you, that He does not hear your prayers, or that He does not care. But He will not ignore you, He can always hear you, and He loves you so much that He gave Himself through Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul taught, “if we [hope for something], we must wait patiently and confidently” (Romans 8:25). While you wait for God to answer your prayer, you can ask Him for patience.
Why Should I Keep Praying?

So why should you keep praying for something you want? “Jesus told His disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up,” which you can read about in Luke 18. God might be using this time of waiting to build up your faith and hope in Him. When you are praying and waiting for God to act, remember that God can use whatever you are going through to “strengthen your confident hope of Salvation” (Romans 5:4).
Pray this week:

That God will teach you to “be still” and wait patiently.

God Loves You!

The Bible says, "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life"

The problem is that...
All of us have done, said or thought things that are wrong. This is called sin, and our sins have separated us from God.

The Bible says "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." God is perfect and holy, and our sins separate us from God forever. The Bible says "The wages of sin is death."

The good news is that, about 2,000 years ago,
God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins.

Jesus is the Son of God. He lived a sinless life and then died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. "God demonstrates His own love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us."

Jesus rose from the dead and now He lives in heaven with God His Father. He offers us the gift of eternal life -- of living forever with Him in heaven if we accept Him as our Lord and Savior.

Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by Me."

God reaches out in love to you and wants you to be His child. "As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe on His name." You can choose to ask Jesus Christ to forgive your sins and come in to your life as your Lord and Savior.
If you want to accept Christ as your Savior and turn from your sins, you can ask Him to be your Savior and Lord by praying a prayer like this:

"Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. Please forgive my sins and give me the gift of eternal life. I ask you in to my life and heart to be my Lord and Savior. I want to serve you always."
