“Statement by the President on the Anniversary of the Birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji
I want to congratulate our Sikh friends in the United States and around the world on the anniversary of the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. During his lifetime in the 14th and 15th centuries, Guru Nanak traveled throughout the region and world promoting equality, diversity, compassion, and tolerance, which became the core principles of Sikhism. The Sikh American community enriches the United States every day with its embodiment of these values, which are shared not just by Sikhs but by all Americans.”

At Kurukshetra, HSGMC and cops clash amid takeover bid
DISTRICT ADMN WAS IN TALKS WITH THE ‘AROUND 1,000 ARMED OUTSIDERS’, BELIEVED TO BE THOSE WITH ALLEGIANCE TO SGPC, TO VACATE THE SHRINE

KURUKSHETRA: At least 35 people, including cops and journalists, were injured when supporters of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) clashed with the police during an unsuccessful attempt to wrest control of the historic Gurdwara Chhevin Patshahi here on Wednesday afternoon. The shrine, which the HSGMC wants as its headquarters, is under control of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), even though HSGMC supporters were successful in taking over three gurdwaras elsewhere.
By the night, district administration was in talks with the “around 1,000 armed outsiders”, believed to be those with allegiance to the SGPC, to vacate the shrine. Nopilgrims were entering.
It had turned violent around 1.30 pm when HSGM Cadhoc chief Jagdish Singh Jhinda made an announcement that management of a gurdwara in Guhla-Cheeka in Kaithal district had been taken over by the HSGMC. He urged the 700-odd HSGMC supporters, who were on dharna outside the shrine for the past few days, to proceed to Guhla-Cheeka, about 60km away.
A section insisted that they would first take control of the gurdwara at Kurukshetra too, and a group started pushing barricades installed by cops at the entry. Police used water cannons, tear gas and batons. Witnesses said HSGMC men pelted the cops with stones and smashed glasses of police vehicles. Additional force was deployed and the mob overpowered. SP Ashwin Shenvi said the situation was tense but under control.
HSGMC vice-president Didar Singh Nalwi alleged that police used force “without provocation”. He claimed the situation turned tense when 400 people owing allegiance to SGPC reached the gurdwara: “When those people were entering the gurdwara, some started throwing stones. Suddenly the police used force on HSGMC members who ran for cover.”
The HSGMC, being run by an ad hoc panel of 41 office-bearers, wants control of the 30-odd Sikh shrines currently being managed by the SGPC.
