Garudan Thookam (translated as Eagle Hanging) is a ritual art form that takes place on the Pooram day in the month of Meenam at the Kali temple in Arayankavu. According to Hindu mythology, this ceremony celebrates the grand arrival of Garuda, an eagle that serves as the Hindu lord Vishnu's mount, for a pooja done by the Devas for Godess Kali. Th
e pooja was to honour the Godess for her victory over an Asura called Dharikan. Each of the devas kept coming for the pooja and Garuda made the final entry in a highly festive manner. Each year, a family from the region conducts Garundan Thookam to recreate this historic entry. Several men dressed up as Garudas perform a dance and hang on their backs. The hanging symbolises Garuda's flight. After the ceremony gets over, the temple is closed and it will be reopened only after 7 days. There were around 150 Garudas for the festival. Arayankavu is a village in Kerala, south India with Piravam Road as the nearest railway station. It belongs to the Amballoor Village Panchayath.
