The legend of Veerabhadran

The legend begins with ‘Daksha Yagham’, the great sacrifice performed by Daksha Prajapathy. Sathi Devi, daughter of Daksha Prajapathy came to participate in the ‘Yagham’. Daksha Prajapathy who did not like Lord Shiva, Sathi Devie’s husband, humiliated his daughter expressing his hatred for Shiva. Disgraced Sathi Devi jumped into the great fire ‘yagagni’ and sacrificed her life. Enraged by this, Lord Shiva plucked his tangled hair and struck it on the ground. On the spot emerged Veerabhadran and Mahakali who had the massive destructive power. Thundering the world, Veerabhadhra and Mahakali rushed to the Yagashala. All the Rishis, Devas and participants ran for life. Veerabhadra destructed the Yaghashala and beheaded Dekshaprajapathy. Mahakali (Goddess Kalarathri) swallowed the blood. After the revenge was accomplished, appeased Lord Shiva appeared there and made them calm and advised them to take ‘Thapas’, the great meditation. After the ages, Veerabhadra and Mahakali transformed themselves as warriors and started moving to the coastal region to protect the people. thumb-1
They started with the intention to get the possession of ‘Allada Mukhatham Desam’ which was under the jurisdiction of ‘Payyanur Perumal’ – the powerful god of ‘Allada Desam’(now the north Malabar). The mighty warriors Sree Veerabhadran and Mahabadra starting from Naduvanattu Keezhoor were accompanied by Sasthavu from Chempravattam, Vettakkorumakan from Kurumbanatt and Kshethrapalakan from Nediyiruppu Desam. On the way Sree Kannikorumakan and Chamundeshwari joined with them . They bowed respectfully before Lord ‘Payyanur Perumal and spent there 12 years expecting god Sree Perumal appearing before them. Goddess Sree Someshwari Devi of Kandothidathil insisted Lord Perumal to appease the guests. Sree Perumal appeared before them and granted the possession of Allada Mukkatham Desam. Sree Kshethrapalakan took the charge of the possession and then all started towards the north. thumb-1
Sree Veerabhadhran decided to stay in the Chervathur Desam which had got a heavy extent of land accounted as “Ellupothi Ennayram Vith” and which was a part of one sixty lands spreading from Gokarnnam to Kannyakumari. God Veerabhadhran in the form of a mighty soldier passed the Mattalai Pass. The other Gods became Maya and invisibly followed Veerabhadran. On the way they met the cultivator Poonthodan Maniyani and from him they happened to know Chervathur Thara and Valiyaveetil Mappila. Veerabhadhran reached the house of Valiyaveetil Mappila and he was welcomed with all respects. From there Sree Veerabhadran continued his journey. At Koyappallipadikkal he met Cheruttara Nair, the writer of Kanhirakuttimannan. There he placed his ‘Edath’ (the shield) and went to the Keezhalath Kambikath Tharavadu. The elder mother of the Tharavadu received the mighty soldier respectfully and offered tender coconuts(Elaneer) to him. The God kept his ‘Valath’ (the Sword) in the sacred pooja room of the Tharavadu and went to the pond to take bath. At this time the great soldier advised the children of the Tharavadu to sacrifice flower and turmeric (Manjal) when he would sink into the pond. But for everybody’s surprise, the mighty warrior did not rise up and at the same time the sword in the pooja room began to shake and tremble. The embarrassed Tharavadu authorities and natives of Chervathur Desam waited for the expert astrologer’s prediction and realized that the real God ‘Vairajathan’ formed as human, had come to settle among the powerful Nairs of Kambikkath. Within no time, the Kambikkath Tharavadu pooja room was transformed into the sanctum of the God Veerabhadran and the great temple was constructed. As the mighty powerful god “Vamban thamburan” blessed the land of Chervathur, it began to be reputed as ‘The land of harvesting Gold’.
