Navarathri Day 9 - Maa Siddhidatri

The 9th day of Navratri which falls in the Maha Navami Tithi observes the worship of Maa Siddhidatri, the 9th form of NavDurga.

About Maa Siddhidatri

Siddhi means supernatural power or the ability to achieve a sense of the ultimate source of creation and existence and Dhatri means the giver. You would be now able to relate to what Maa Siddhidatri can boon us with.

If we worship her, we may get the ultimate power to realize the true existence. She is also said to help remove ignorance. According to the scriptures there are 8 types of Siddhis – Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakyamya, Insh*tva, Vash*tva. She is one of the glorious aspects of Navadurga.

𝘿𝙖𝙮 7-𝙈𝙖𝙖 𝙆𝙖𝙡𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙞 𝙥𝙪𝙟𝙖

On the seventh day of Navratri, the Kalratri form of Maa Durga is worshiped. Worshiping them protects the sudden crises on the person. This form of mother is the destroyer of enemies and evil. On the seventh day of Navratri, those who worship Maa Kalratri do not have fear of ghosts, ghosts or evil power.

Maa Kalaratri is considered to be the most ferocious avatar of NavDurga and is known for destroying ignorance and removing darkness from the universe.

Origin

As per the Hindu scriptures, it is believed that the repulsive, fierce and violent appearance of Goddess Durga emerged when the deity peeled off her divine golden skin in order to attack the demons. She is regarded as the vanquisher of all the fears, negative forces, ghosts, and evil. However, Goddess Kalaratri is very benevolent in protecting the devotees and always blesses them by fulfilling all their wishes and desires. Thus, the goddess is also known as Shubhankari.

As per the Hindu scriptures, it is believed that worshipping Goddess Kalaratri on the seventh day gives an abundant fruitful result. With her grace, devotees get power, position and earn an eminent status. Goddess Kalaratri is the owner and granter for siddhis. She is worshipped for siddhis, knowledge, power and wealth.

This day of Navratri has a great significance for Ta**ra Sadhna. The day is eagerly awaited by Sadhus and Tantriks. All the evil powers such as demons etc. can be warded off if the name of Maa is chanted. Her blessing removes all sorts of fears forever. It is believed that sweets made from Jaggery are distributed on this day to get rid of poverty.

Appearance and Form Kalratri Devi, also known as Maa Kaali, is the most ferocious form of Goddess Durga. This Krishna (black) colored Goddess has long tousled hair and three round protruding eyes. She exhales flames through her nostrils while breathing and has four arms that depict her immense strength. Also, she holds a cleaver and a deadly sabre in each of her hands, while her other hands are in Abhay and Varada mudras to grant blessings and protection to her sadhakas.

The sixth form of the Mother Divine is Katyayani. Worshipped on the sixth day (Shashti), she is also known as a Warrior Goddess and is believed to be one of the most violent forms of Maa Durga.

Form of the Devi
Goddess Katyayani has three eyes and four hands. She holds a sword in one of her left hands and a lotus in another. Her right hands can be seen in the varada mudra (bestowing boons) and abhaya mudra (represents removal of fear, benevolence and protection). With the crescent moon adorning her forehead, Goddess Katyayani rides a lion.

What Kaytayani represents
The subtle world which is invisible and unmanifest is ruled by this form of the Mother Divine – Katyayani. In this form, she represents everything that cannot be seen or understood. Katyayani represents the deep and most intricate secrets of Divinity.

Legend behind why the Devi took the form of Katyayani

Sage Katyayan longed for Devi Durga to be born as his daughter. He prayed and practiced austere penance for years. It was the time when the demon Mahishasura was creating havoc on earth. In despair, the gods beseeched Lord Vishnu to help them. Lord Vishnu called upon Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma to join him. The Holy Trinity combined their powers to create Goddess Katyayani, who was born to sage Katyahan. It is said in the Kalika Purana that the sage was the first to worship Goddess Durga in the form of Katyayani.

𝙉𝙖𝙫𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙞 𝘿𝙖𝙮 -5 𝙎𝙠𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙖 𝙥𝙪𝙟𝙖

Skandmata Mata is worshipped on the fifth day of Navratri. Her name means: ‘Skanda’ - Lord Kartikeya/Murugan and ‘Mata’ - mother. Hence, this name means that she is the mother of the Skanda (Lord Karthikeya).

About Maa Skandamata

Skanda is another name for Lord Kartikeya (Ma Parvati’s son and Lord Ganesha’s brother). Mata means mother and thus Skandamata means mother of Skanda or Kartikeya. As is clear from the name, she is another form of Ma Parvati.

In this form, Durga has four arms. She holds Kartikeya (Skanda) in one hand, holds a lotus in the second and the third hand and blesses her devotees with the fourth hand. She rides a lion and sits on a lotus (due to which she is also called Padmasana). Kartikeya is also known as Lord Murugan in South India. He is the commander-in-chief of the of the army of devas.

Significance

Ma Skandamata is worshipped as the mother of a supremely gifted child. When a devotee worships Skandamata, Lord Kartikeya is automatically worshipped as he is sitting in her mother’s lap. Her worship leads to peace, prosperity and salvation.
