One of the most heartbreaking moments in history is when people reject the very one who came to save them. In Matthew 21:38, Jesus tells a parable that reveals this tragedy:
But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.
Jesus spoke this parable to the religious leaders just days before His crucifixion. He described a vineyard owner who planted and prepared a vineyard, then leased it to tenants who were supposed to care for it and give him his due. When the time came for the owner to collect the harvest, he sent servants to receive what belonged to him. But instead of honoring their agreement, the tenants mistreated, beat, and killed the servants. Finally, the owner sent his son, thinking they would respect him. But seeing the son, the tenants conspired against him, saying, "This is the heir. Let us kill him and take his inheritance."
This parable was a direct message to the religious leaders of Israel. God had entrusted them with spiritual leadership over His people, just as the landowner entrusted the vineyard to the tenants. Over time, God sent prophets to call His people to repent, but they were rejected, mistreated, and even killed. Finally, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, but instead of receiving Him with honor, the religious leaders plotted His death, thinking they could hold on to their own power and control.
The problem was not ignorance but rebellion. The tenants recognized the son as the heir, yet they still chose to kill him. In the same way, the religious leaders saw Jesusโ miracles, heard His teachings, and even acknowledged His authority, but they refused to surrender to Him. Their hearts were hardened by pride and the desire to protect their own positions. Instead of submitting to God's plan, they tried to eliminate the very one who came to save them.
This parable is not just a historical story; it carries a message for us today. Many people recognize who Jesus is but still reject Him. Some are afraid to surrender control of their lives, while others are too focused on their own ambitions. There are those who hear the Gospel but choose to ignore it, thinking they can live without God. But rejecting Christ does not lead to freedom or gain it leads to loss. The tenants thought they could take the inheritance by force, but they ended up losing everything. The same is true for anyone who tries to build a life apart from God.
Yet, despite this rejection, God's grace remains. Though the religious leaders crucified Jesus, His death and resurrection opened the door for salvation to all who would believe. The inheritance of Godโs kingdom was no longer limited to Israelโs leaders but was given to those who accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. Today, this same offer is extended to us. If we accept Christ, we become heirs with Him, not by our works but by His grace. We receive eternal life, a restored relationship with God, and a place in His kingdom. But if we continue to reject Him, we risk losing the greatest inheritance of all eternal life with God.
The lesson of this parable is clear. We must not harden our hearts like the tenants in the vineyard. Instead, we should recognize Jesus as the rightful heir, surrender to His lordship, and receive the inheritance that only He can give. The choice is before us. Will we accept the Son and share in His kingdom, or will we reject Him and lose what truly matters? The decision is ours to make. Let us not repeat the mistake of those who saw the Son and still turned Him away. Instead, let us embrace Him with faith, knowing that in Him, we find true life and an eternal inheritance. Amen.
