~~~~ Rajinder Tikoo
In Kashmir Maagh Shukla Paksh Chaturthi (lunar calendar) also called Tripurā Chaturthi ( locally called Tiek Chorum ) is celebrated by certain clans of Kashmiri Pandit families with religious fervour and gaiety.
Tripurā Bagwati also known as Tripursundhari and Rajrajeshwari and with various other names is worshipped on this day. In Kashmir she is the Isht Devi of Kashmiri Pandits having the surname Tikoo . She is also the Clan Deity of the families having the surnames Garyali and Budshah . Her cult is more prominent in Tikoo (Tiku, Tickoo) clan of kashmiri pandits.
Goddess Tripurā also known as Tripursundari, the goddess who stands for all that can be conceptualized, that is visible, and the absolute, pure consciousness, that transcends the world that manifests in the triadic structure ( trika ) of the subject, object, and cognition.
In Srinagar before 1990 lots of kashmiri pandits on this auspicious day of Tiek Chorum used to visit at the shrine located in the premises if Sh Prithvi Nath Tickoo's house situated at Karfalli Mohalla , Srinagar. Apart from donations (niyaz) ,Taher ( yellow rice - rice mixed with turmeric), Charvan ( cooked sheep or goat liver) , Kheer and Halwa were the ritualistic offerings to the Goddess Tripura. On this day Kashmiri Pandits used to recite Panchastavi a collection of five ancient hymns in the praise of the great Goddess Tripursundari.
This day also marks the ta***ic tradition of kashmiri pandits as the Goddess Tripurā is ritually accessed through Ta**ra and Mantra.
In Kashmir Maagh maas shukla paksha Tritya , locally known as Gour Trai being traditionally a cultural festival with spiritual fervour and day is dedicated to Mother Goddess Sharda in Kashmiri Pandit community. It falls on the third day of Maagh Shukla Paksha .
Goddess Sharda is considered in Kashmiri Pandit culture as the presiding deity of wisdom , speech , learning , all kinds of knowledge ( music, science, etc.). This day is considered to be the pradurbhava diwas of Mother Goddess Sharda.
ध्यान
गायत्री
ॐ शारदायै विध्महे सप्त दशाज्ञयैं धीमहि तन्नो सरस्वती प्रचोदयात्
मंत्र
Kashmiri attire usually white or pale yellow fair white complexion , seated on lotus holding Veena (symbol of music) , a book , a rosary and a trident in her four hands. White Swan is her divine mount.
The day prior to Gour Trai is known as Rang Doi , colours are prepared indigenously for the making of hand made Gour Trai. A few decades back it was made by hands by having impression of elephants , grass , trees , swan, peacock and image of maa Sharda and later of Mata Saraswati with an accompanying Shaloka on a white sheet of paper.
The family priest ( Kul Brahman) would bring it in the morning to his Jajman's house. Yellow rice (turmeric added rice) called taher in Kashmir is prepared in the morning and preypun (pooja invoking various gods to share this prasad and shower blessings to the family) performed. Kul Brahman is offered taher , tea and dakshina (money) . The blessings of the Goddess Sharda are invoked by applying tilak of sandal paste or turmeric to the religious books and books of children and musical instruments. Main significance of this day is that small children are initiated to the symbolic learning of alphabets /simple shalokas by Kul Brahman on the morning of Gour Trai. From here his journey starts for attainment of knowledge (gyan).
Blessings and best wishes.
MAKAR SANKRANTI ( Shisher Saenkraat ) IN KASHMIR
~ Rajinder Tikoo
The transit of Sun from one zodiac to another is called Sankranti. Here transit of sun to capricorn zodiac ( मकर rashi ) takes place . Also called Uttarayana , this year as per lunar calendar it falls today ( 14 Jan 2026 ) krishna paksha , Ekadashi of Maagha Maas. Out of all twelve sankranti , मकर sankranti ( kashmiri - Shisher Saenkrat ) has its own relevance , as it marks the start of Shisher ritu ( season) and start of maag maas as per sankranti calendar . This day gets its importance by taking a dip in holy rivers or visiting places of pilgrimage followed by ritualistic pooja along with daan dakshina.
It is believed that on the occasion of Makar / Shishir Sankranti, to save our deceased from the severe cold of winters of Shishir season we ritualisticly donate Kangri ( kanger mansavan) containing burning coal in the name of our ancestors. Tomul (rice) and saabut moong along with salt ( for khichdi) is also kept besides kangri containing burning coal in it. It is donated in the name of deceased parents , grand parents , ancestors. Kambal ( blanket ) and clothes and fal - mool are recent addition. Some people donate blankets / warm clothes, but they don't give new one. It should be new one as per dharam shastra . After sankalpa this kangri etc are given to brahmin and not to beggers or poor. Giving it to poor / beggers is wrong according to dharam shastra.
महेश्वरे वा जगतामधीश्र्वरे
जनार्दने वा जगदन्तरात्मनि।
न कापि भेदप्रतिपत्तिरस्ति मे
तथापि भक्तिस्तरुणेन्दुशेखरे।।
भगवान शिव , जो कि तीनों लोकों [ भू , भुव , स्वा ] के मालिक हैं उनकी भक्ति, तथा भगवान विष्णु की भक्ति जो कि सभी जीवित प्राणियों के हृदय में वास करते हैं, मेरे लिए दोनों भक्ति एक समान हैं , क्योंकि भक्ति में भेद हो ही नहीं सकता , मगर फिर भी हे प्रभु ! मैं भगवान शिव , जिनके मस्तिष्क पे अर्ध चंद्र विराजमान हैं , की भक्ति में लीन रहना पसंद करता हूं ।
Devotion to Lord Shiva,who is the master of the three worlds, and devotion to Lord Narayana,who resides in the heart of each and every living being, exists for me equally because nowhere does there exist a distinction of devotion. Even then,O my Lord, I prefer devotion to Lord Shiva on whose forehead shines the crescent moon.
प्रकाशमाने परमार्थभानौ,
नश्यत्यविधा तिमिरे समस्ते।
तदा बुधा निर्मल दृष्टयोऽपि,
किंचित् न पश्यन्ति भवप्रपंचम।।
Guru maharaj explains, when a yogi remains one pointed he realizes the sun of supreme knowledge, and when his ignorance has ended and he becomes a realized soul,then, no matter whatever he does he is soaked in God consciousness everywhere and has attained eternal samadhi.
HARA # MAHADEV # SHIVA # HAR HAR MAHADEV
भीतिः नास्ति भुजंग पुंगववशात्
प्रीतिः न चन्द्रामृतात् ।
नाशौचम च कपाल धाम ललनात् ,
शौचम् न गंगा जलात्।
न उदवेगं चिति भस्मना
न च सुखं , गौरीस्तन् आलिंङगनात।
आत्मा रामतया हित अहित समाः स्वस्थो हरः पातु नः।।
अर्थात वह, जिसे न तो अत्यंत जहरीले सांप गले में धारण करने से डर लगता है , न ही इतनी प्यारी चन्द्र कला को माथे पर धारण करने से प्रीती प्रतीत होती है। न तो गले में मुंड माला धारण करने से अपवित्र होता है न तो गंगा जल जटा से गिरते रहने से पवित्र बनता है। न तो शमशान के भसम को अपने तन पे मलने से उदवेग (घबराहट) होता है , न गौरी से आलिंगन करने से सुख की अनुभूति होती है जो सदा अपने आत्म स्वरूप में लीन रहता है वही भगवान शिव हमारी रक्षा करें।
जय गुरुदेव।
Who doesn't fear wearing most venomous snakes around his neck neither is he moved with love for wearing so cute chandrakalā ( cresent moon ) over his forehead. Neither he becomes unholy, unsanctified by putting a garland of skulls nor is he sanctified by water of ganges rolling down his locked hairs. Neither is he terrified by applying ashes brought from crematorium around his body nor does he feel pleasure by embracing Gouri ( wife - Parvati ). He who always remains in his universal self, we pray to that HARA ( Lord Shiva ) to protect us.
Swamiji while talking about chidanand rasa at one point says do you know that one who has attained a very limited amount of this miraculous chidanand rasa, he is at that very moment established in that great swatantrya daam of lord Shiva. For him samadhi, yoga, fasting, mantra and japa etc. all such karmas seem useless to him.
YakshAmavasya # Khichdi Amavasya
( Khaechimavus )
[ A Cultural and Spiritual Legacy of the Kashmiri Pandit Community ]
~~ Rajinder Tikoo
Khichdi Amavasya ( in Kashmiri language - Khaechi mavas ) being a cultural festival is celebrated with a religious sanctity in Kashmir . It is celebrated on the last day of krishan paksha of lunar month of Posh on Amavasya (poh g*t paech mavas) .
This year today 19 December 2025 is being celebrated as YakshAmavasya / khichdi Amavasya.
On the evening of Khichdi Amavasya , rice mixed with saboot moong daal and a little bit of turmeric powder is cooked . As per custom of individual household Khichdi is prepared. ( Family prepare meat or cheese/vegetable also as per the individual family's reeti [ custom ] ) . Khichdi is prepared with sanctimonious purity and is kept on a fresh earthen plate ( kashmiri - T**e ) , meat or cheese/ vegetable (as per household tradition) along with a piece of kadam ( kholrabi ) pickle and raw raddish piece are put on khichdi besides this a few leaves of mountainous evergreen bush patri ( called paetr) are also placed on this khichdi. This paetr used to be brought from higher mountainous region and would be available in market on this occasion. Now this earthen thali ( t**e ) is placed on a hand woven circular grass base called Arie (aer) . Adjacent to is kept a pestle ( Kaajvut ) seated also on a grass woven Arie in an upright position. Tilak is applied to it and pooja to Kuber devta along with prepun is then performed .
Now this earthen thali and pestle along with Arie base and a gadva of water are placed in the courtyard or on the courtyard wall of the house. The place where it is kept should be cleaned by applying a little of muddy water ( kashmiri - livun ). Afterwards household consumes the rest of cooked khichdi as Prasad (kashmiri - naveed) .
Pestle is a symbolic representation of Lord Kubera , the king of Yakshas . Lord Kubera ( Yakshapati ) , the ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, has been entrusted with key to treasure of all wealth i.e. gold , silver , diamonds and other precious items.
This festival also authenticates and affirms the historicity of Yakshas. They were an ancient aboriginal tribe of Kashmir , who dwelled on the upper mountainous regions of Himalayas . Yakshas like Kashmir Pandits were ardent worshipers of Dev -adi -dev Mahadev ( Lord Siva) .
Khaechimavus greetings to all of you with a prayer that lord kubera may always shower his blessings to our community.
