Jonah was given a clear message from God, but instead of obeying, he chose to run in the opposite direction.
God had called Jonah to go to Nineveh, a great city known for its wickedness, and to warn its people to turn from their ways. But Jonah did not want to go. He boarded a ship, hoping to escape the responsibility placed before him.
Yet no one can hide from God.
A great storm arose at sea, and Jonah soon realised that running from God would not bring peace. When he was thrown into the sea, God provided a great fish to swallow him, preserving his life in a most unexpected way.
From the depths, Jonah prayed, and God gave him another opportunity to obey.
When Jonah finally went to Nineveh and delivered God’s message, the people listened. Even the king humbled himself, and the city turned from its wrongdoing.
Jonah’s story reminds us that God is patient and merciful. Even when people fail, God provides opportunities to change direction and follow His ways.
This powerful account shows that we may try to avoid what God asks of us, but His purpose continues to reach us wherever we go.
