As citizens of this society, we are all equally indebted to such great visionaries who risked their position, name and fame for the sake of the society. The very fact that He is remembered after thousand years, speaks volumes. It is not very often that we get to participate in the one thousandth birth anniversary celebration of a great personality. That was not the only revolution Ramanujacharya did in His days, there were many more. It is worth reading His life history to get to know them all. All of His actions stood for Equality regardless of birth, education, wealth or gender.
To mark the One thousandth year of the birth of Sri Ramanujacharya, a descendent in the disciplic succession of Sri Ramanujacharya, HH Sri Sri Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamy has conceived the idea of Statue of Equality – a 216 feet sitting statue of Sri Ramanujacharya.

Thousand years ago, a great personality named Ramanujacharya walked this Earth causing huge waves in the society. He was not only a saint but also a social reformer, pioneer of sorts, revolutionary, visionary, mentor and the greatest of Gurus.

This is the 21st century and we are still dealing with issues related to tolerance and equality.

In the 11th century between 1017 and 1137 Ramanujacharya revolutionized the system by declaring that all are God’s children and everyone has a right to “Bhakti” – love for God, regardless of their birth. They should be allowed into the temple to express their devotion and develop a relationship with God. He personally led them all into the temple at Melkote, near Mysuru. What an uproar that would have caused in the society thousand years ago! But it was His revolutionary action that day that has led us to take for granted that all of us can worship at the temple and rightfully so.

There is a lot of discussion about tolerance between different sects and religions, rights of individuals or groups, equality of different “castes” and genders. The list is only indicative and not exhaustive. There is so much discussion in all kinds of media. Despite the debates one cannot ignore the fact that the very existence of such discussions is a positive situation in India. That is the kind of society we live today in the 21st century. But we must remember, it was not always so.

Whether it is East or West, one religion or the other, many disputed concepts have been in practice for hundreds if not thousands of years. There is a lot of inertia in the society to change what has been in practice for eons. Sometimes, we lose track of the origin of the practice just because it has been just too long. Historically, it takes a revolutionary (or a few) to change the system and bring in new practices.
