Lent Devotion : 07-03-2023

Topic : "Fasting"
Bible reference : Matthew 6:16-18

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today, as we continue our Lenten journey, we turn our attention to the practice of fasting. Fasting is one of the spiritual disciplines that helps us to draw closer to God and to strengthen our faith. In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus teaches us about the importance of fasting:

"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Jesus is reminding us that fasting is not about showing off or impressing others. It is a private and personal act of devotion to God. It is a way of humbling ourselves before God and seeking His will in our lives. When we fast, we deny ourselves something that we desire in order to focus our attention on God and to seek His guidance and strength.

Let me share with you an illustration to help us understand the value of fasting. Imagine that you are hiking up a steep mountain trail. As you climb higher, the air becomes thinner, and your legs become tired. You begin to feel hungry and thirsty, but you know that you have a long way to go. So you decide to stop and take a break. You sit down on a rock and eat a small snack and drink some water. As you rest and refuel, you feel a renewed sense of strength and energy. You are able to continue the climb with greater focus and determination.

In the same way, fasting is like taking a break on our spiritual journey. We deny ourselves something that we desire, whether it be food, entertainment, or some other pleasure, in order to refocus our attention on God. When we do this, we allow God to renew our strength and give us the energy we need to continue on our journey with greater faith and devotion.

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of fasting. Help us to use this discipline to draw closer to you and to seek your will in our lives. Give us the strength and the courage to deny ourselves and to focus our attention on you. May our fasting be a sign of our love and devotion to you, and may it bring us closer to the person you want us to be. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

*Lent Devotion : OBEDIENCE*
Bible Reference : Phill 2:5-11

Dear brothers and sisters,

As we are in this season of Lent, we are reminded of the importance of obedience to God. Today, I want to reflect on the theme of obedience, as we consider Philippians 2:5-11.

In this passage, the apostle Paul urges us to follow the example of Jesus Christ, who humbled himself and became obedient to God, even to the point of death on the cross. Paul reminds us that God exalted Jesus and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

This passage challenges us to consider our own obedience to God. How often do we find ourselves resisting God's will, choosing our own way instead of following His? How often do we prioritize our own desires over God's plan for our lives? It is easy to fall into the trap of pride and self-centeredness, but Paul reminds us that true greatness comes through humility and obedience to God.

Let us take this season of Lent as an opportunity to reflect on our own obedience to God. Let us turn to Jesus Christ as our example, and strive to follow his footsteps of humility and obedience. And let us remember that, just as God exalted Jesus for his obedience, so too will God bless and exalt those who are obedient to Him.

Illustration: Imagine a soldier who is ordered to complete a dangerous mission. The soldier, knowing the risks involved, hesitates and considers disobeying his orders. But then he remembers his commitment to his country and his duty as a soldier. He puts aside his fear and doubts, and sets out to complete the mission, even at great personal cost. This is a reminder that obedience to God requires sacrifice and courage, but that it is ultimately the path to true greatness.

Closing prayer: Dear God, as we begin this season of Lent, we ask for your guidance and strength. Help us to follow the example of Jesus Christ, who humbled himself and became obedient to you, even to the point of death on the cross. Give us the courage to put aside our own desires and to submit to your will for our lives. Help us to trust in your plan for us, and to find true greatness through humility and obedience. We pray that you would bless us and exalt us as we seek to honor and obey you. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Genesis 4: 8- 16 | Psalm 25 | Romans 5: 6-11 | Mark 2: 1- 12

Loving God, Who, revealed Your love to us by reconciling us to You through the death of Your Son and who continues to forgive all those who repent of their sins, We pray that, You do not remember our sins and our rebellious ways, rather, forgive us by Your words, “Your sins are forgiven”, So that we put off our old self, corrupted by its deceitful desires and put on the new self, living in holiness, being kind to one another and forgiving each other, Through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever more. Amen

Lent Devotion: "The Authority of Christ"

Bible Reference: Luke 4:31-36

Illustration: Imagine a person who is lost in the middle of a dense forest. They are surrounded by darkness and uncertainty, with no idea which direction to go. But then a guide appears, holding a bright light that illuminates the path and shows them the way. In the same way, Jesus is our guide, holding the light of his authority to lead us through the darkness of this world.

In Luke 4:31-36, we see Jesus demonstrating his authority over evil spirits. When he encountered a man possessed by a demon, he spoke with authority and commanded the demon to leave. The demon obeyed, and the man was freed from his torment.

Jesus' authority was not just limited to casting out demons, however. He had authority over all aspects of life, including sickness, sin, and death. His words and actions showed that he was not just a mere human, but the Son of God, sent to save the world.

In the season of Lent, we are called to reflect on the authority of Christ and to submit ourselves to his leadership. We must trust in his guidance and follow his path, even when it seems uncertain or difficult.

But the good news is that when we do trust in Christ's authority, he promises us freedom and salvation. He promises to lead us out of the darkness and into the light, showing us the way to eternal life with him.

So let us submit ourselves to the authority of Christ, trusting in his guidance and following his path. Let us be like the man who was freed from the demon, praising God and sharing the good news of Christ's power and authority with others.

Closing Prayer: Dear God, we thank you for the gift of Christ's authority, and for the example he gave us of true leadership. Help us to submit ourselves to his guidance, trusting in his path and following him with all our hearts. Give us the strength and courage we need to face the challenges of this world, and may our lives be a shining example of his love and grace. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Lent Devotion: "The Cost of Discipleship"

Bible Reference: Luke 14:25-33

Illustration: Imagine a person who wants to build a tower. Before they begin, they must first calculate the cost to ensure they have enough resources to complete the project. In the same way, Jesus tells us that before we commit to following him, we must count the cost and be willing to make the necessary sacrifices.

In Luke 14:25-33, Jesus says, "If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple... In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples."

Following Jesus requires sacrifice and commitment. It means putting him first, above all other relationships and possessions. It means carrying our cross and following him, even when it's difficult or uncomfortable.

In the season of Lent, we are called to reflect on our own discipleship and to recommit ourselves to following Jesus. We must be willing to count the cost and make the necessary sacrifices, putting him first in our lives.

But the good news is that when we do choose to follow Jesus, he promises us a life of abundance and fulfillment. He promises to be with us always, and to give us the strength and courage we need to face any challenges that come our way.

So let us count the cost of discipleship, and let us be willing to make the necessary sacrifices. Let us put Jesus first in our lives and follow him wherever he leads us. And may our commitment to him be a shining example to others, drawing them closer to his love and grace.

Closing Prayer: Dear God, we thank you for the gift of discipleship and for the example of Jesus, who gave everything to follow your will. Help us to count the cost of following him, and to be willing to make the necessary sacrifices. Give us the strength and courage we need to carry our cross and follow him, and may our commitment to him be a shining example to others. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Lent Devotion: *"The Power of Intercession"*

Bible Reference: Philippians 4:4-7

Illustration: Imagine a person standing in the gap between two opposing sides. They are the mediator, the peacemaker, the one who brings reconciliation. In the same way, we as Christians are called to intercede on behalf of others, standing in the gap between them and God.

In Philippians 4:4-7, Paul tells us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Intercession is a powerful tool that we have as Christians. It allows us to pray for others, bringing their needs before God and asking for his intervention in their lives. Through intercession, we can stand in the gap for others, bringing them closer to God and helping them to experience his love and grace.

In the season of Lent, we are called to reflect on our own lives and to intercede on behalf of others. We must pray for those who are lost, broken, and in need of God's healing touch. We must stand in the gap for those who are struggling with sin and addiction, asking God to break the chains that bind them.

Intercession is not just about praying for others, it's about being the hands and feet of Jesus in the world. It's about reaching out to those in need, showing them the love of Christ, and helping them to experience his grace and mercy.

So let us be intercessors, standing in the gap for others and bringing their needs before God. Let us be peacemakers, reconciling others to God and to one another. And let us be the hands and feet of Jesus in the world, showing his love to all those around us. May our prayers and our actions bring hope, healing, and peace to a world in need.

Lent Devotion: "Beware of Hypocrisy"

Bible reference: Luke 12:1-5

Illustration: Imagine a person who goes to church every Sunday, sings hymns, and listens to the pastor's message. But outside of church, this person acts completely different. They gossip about others, lie, cheat, and steal. This person is a hypocrite, and their actions do not reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ.

In Luke 12:1-5, Jesus warns his followers about the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, who acted righteous in public but were corrupt in private. He tells them, "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs."

Hypocrisy is a serious sin that can damage our relationship with God and others. It is easy to put on a facade and act one way in public while living a completely different life behind closed doors. But Jesus tells us that everything will eventually come to light, and our actions will be revealed for what they truly are.

As Christians, we must strive to live a life of integrity and authenticity, both in public and in private. Our actions should reflect the teachings of Jesus, and we should be true to ourselves and to God. We must resist the temptation to be hypocrites and instead live a life that is true and genuine.

So let us beware of hypocrisy, and let us strive to be honest, genuine, and faithful to God. May our actions always reflect the teachings of Jesus, and may we never be afraid to live a life of integrity and authenticity.

"You're the Light of the World"

Bible Reference - Matthew 5:14-16

Illustration: Imagine a dark room with only one source of light - a candle. The light from the candle fills the room, the light is in everything around it. The candle doesn't discriminate or choose what it shines its light on, it simply shines for all to see. In the same way, Jesus tells us that we are the light of the world, and just like a candle, we should shine our light for all to see.

In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus says, "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and Glorify the Abba Father in heaven."

As Christians, we are called to be a light in a world that can often be dark and confusing. Our light should shine brightly, and it should bring Christians closer to God. We should never be afraid to let our light shine, and we should always be proud of our faith.

Just like a candle, our light can be a comfort to those who are lost or struggling. It can guide them to the path of righteousness and help them find their way back to God. And just like a candle, our light can be a source of hope in a world that can sometimes feel hopeless.

So, let us go out and be the light of the world. Let us shine brightly for all to see, and let us never be afraid to let our light shine. May our good deeds and our faith in God be a beacon of hope to all those around us, and may our light glorify our Father in heaven.

Title: "Answering God's Call"

Bible Reference : Mark 3:13-19

Illustration: Imagine a group of people gathered around a campfire, telling stories and enjoying each other's company. Suddenly, one of them hears a voice calling out from the darkness beyond the fire's glow. It's a call to adventure, an invitation to leave the comfort and safety of the campfire and follow the voice into the unknown.

In Mark 3:13-19, Jesus calls his disciples to follow him. He chooses twelve men to be his closest companions and to carry on his ministry after he is gone. They leave behind their homes, their families, and their old way of life, and they follow Jesus into the unknown.

Like the disciples, we are all called by God to follow him. We may not hear a voice calling out from the darkness, but we can feel the pull of God's call on our hearts. We are invited to leave behind our old way of life, to let go of the things that hold us back, and to follow God into a new and exciting adventure.

But answering God's call is not always easy. It may require us to make sacrifices, to step outside of our comfort zone, and to trust in God's plan for our lives. We may face opposition from others or uncertainty about what lies ahead. But when we answer God's call, we are rewarded with a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment than we could ever find on our own.

Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you for calling us to follow you. Help us to hear your voice calling out to us, and to have the courage and the faith to answer that call. Give us the strength and the wisdom to leave behind our old way of life, and to follow you into a new and exciting adventure. May our lives be a reflection of your love and grace, and may we always put our trust in you. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Title: "Following God at All Costs"

Bible Reference: Mark 8:34-37

Illustration: Imagine a hiker climbing a steep and rocky mountain trail. The journey is difficult, with many obstacles and challenges along the way. But the hiker is committed to reaching the summit, and so they press on, following the path that leads them to their destination.

In the same way, following God can be a difficult and challenging journey. It requires us to take up our cross, to deny ourselves and our own desires, and to follow Jesus wherever he leads us. But just like the hiker on the mountain trail, we are called to press on, trusting in God to guide us and sustain us along the way.

In Mark 8:34-37, Jesus tells his disciples that following him will require sacrifice and self-denial. But he also tells them that the reward is great: eternal life with God. He reminds them that gaining the whole world is not worth losing their soul.

During the season of Lent, we are called to reflect on our own commitment to following God, and to consider the sacrifices that may be required of us. Are we willing to give up our own desires and plans in order to follow God's will for our lives? Are we willing to take up our cross and follow Jesus, no matter where he leads us?

Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of salvation through your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to have the courage and the faith to follow him, even when the journey is difficult and the path is unclear. Give us the strength and the determination to take up our cross and follow him wherever he leads us, knowing that the reward is great. May we always put our trust in you, and may our lives be a reflection of your love and grace. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
