Mawlana Abul Kalam Azad (d.1958) was an Indian theologil, a poltical activist and one of the leaders of the Indian independence movement against British rule in the first half of the 20th century. He was highly respected throughout his life as a man of high moral integrity.

In his book India Wins Freedom he writes about the 1947 partition from his perspective. It includes his personal experiences when India became independent, and his ideas on freedom and liberty. The book takes the form of an autobiographical narrative and goes over the happenings of the Indian Independence movement.
Kalam didn't want the inception of a separate Muslim state (like many other prominent individuals) and argued for a united India against the colonial rule.
