*Angels play an important role in the Christmas story.* The angel Gabriel appeared to Zachariah to announce that he and Elizabeth would have a son, *John the Baptist* , who would be the forerunner of the Messiah ( *Luke 1:5-25* ). Then Gabriel was sent to the virgin Mary to explain that she would become the mother of Jesus, God's Son, after being overshadowed by the Holy Spirit ( *Luke 1:26-38* ). An angel then appeared to Joseph in a dream encouraging him not to fear taking Mary as his wife, and to name the baby "Jesus" because he would " *save his people from their sin* " ( *Matthew 1:18-24* ). A great company of angels announced Jesus' birth to the shepherds ( *Luke 2:8-14* ). Finally, an angel warned Joseph to flee to Egypt with Jesus so that wicked King Herod would not kill Him ( *Matthew 2:13* ).
How privileged the shepherds were to hear the *angel choir as they praised God* at the announcement of *Jesus' birth.*
The shepherds heard the voice of the Lord in the angels’ song. Amen.
