Mar Yacob Burdana orthodox Syrian church popularly known as "Mankuzi Pally" was established in the year 1867 in Karuvatta, The western region of the Nirnam Diocese (Now it is Mavelikara Diocese). This was the first parish named after Mar Yacob Burdana in the Malankara Orthodox Church. The parish has come very far from its humble beginnings of conducting service in a shed to the beautiful building

that is seen today. The undiminished enthusiasm of every member of the parish is evident in the time and effort put in for the reconstruction of this beautiful church that stands as pride of karuvatta today. HISTORY:-

Mar Yacob Burdana Church has a history of struggle and hardships. It stands as an evidence of unwavering Christian faith held by people of Karuvatta. In the early nineteen hundreds people of karuvatta used travel to Karthitkapally & Cheppad for attending the holy qurbana. As the journey to Kathirapally and Cheppad became difficult the prominent people of Orthodox families in karuvatta decided to build a church. Eventhough it was very difficult to obtain government permission to construct a church the people of managed to get the permit. On receiving the permission Late Mankuzil Eppan chona agreed to provide his ‘Karakad‘ land for the new church ,the devotees requested then high priest Palakunnathu Mathews Mar Athanasius to provide permission to start the services in a shed . The church services continued in this manner for several years. A difference in opinion between the parish members over a funeral service that was held in kathirapally gave way to split between members of the parish to conduct service in two sheds. In time one section of the church was dissolved and the service continued to be held in one shed. In 1866 the people requested Pulikotil Mar Divanaisos to seek permission for a permanent church in karuvatta .In 1042 (Malayalam Year) Pulikotil Mar Divanaisos laid the foundation for the church in the name of Mar Yacob Burdana. After 12 year’s kuzithail Mr: Mathew took charge as Mufif (Haripad) and he joined in the church and re initiated all construction activities of the church. PRAYER GROUPS:-
