Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration Committee Secures Patron for 2026 Festivities

Gangtok, January 17, 2026:
The Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration Committee, in collaboration with Yuma Manghim Tongjem Chumbho, Bermiok–Namphing Rekep, Namchi, Sikkim, paid a courtesy visit this evening to Mr. A. B. S***a, PCE-cum-Secretary, Roads and Bridges Department (PWD), Government of Sikkim, at his residence in Gangtok.

During the meeting, the committee formally requested Mr. S***a to serve as the Patron of the Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration 2026. Mr. S***a warmly acknowledged the request and graciously accepted the role of Patron. He also accepted the invitation to attend the Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration scheduled for 21st January 2026.

The delegation comprised Mr. Arpan S***a, President of the Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration Committee; Mr. Bhim Hang S***a, General Secretary; Mr. Yem Prashad S***a, Treasurer; and Mr. Yog Bahadur Limbu, Chief Co-ordinator-cum-President of Yuma Manghim Tongjem Chumbho.

The meeting was marked by cordial interaction and mutual goodwill. The committee members expressed immense joy and gratitude at Mr. S***a’s acceptance, describing the occasion as a moment of pride and encouragement for the successful organization of the upcoming celebration.

The committee further stated that Mr. S***a’s patronage will serve as a great source of inspiration and support, significantly contributing to the promotion of cultural values, unity, and the overall success of the Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration 2026.

25𝑡ℎ 𝐷𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 2025, 𝑁𝑎𝑚𝑐ℎ𝑖, 𝑆𝑖𝑘𝑘𝑖𝑚:

A general meeting in connection with the Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration 2026 was convened on 25th December 2025 at the residence of Shri Aita Raj Limbu at Rekep, Namchi District, Sikkim. The celebration is being organized by the 𝐊𝐨𝐤𝐟𝐞𝐤𝐰𝐚 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐦 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐘𝐮𝐦𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐣𝐞𝐦 𝐂𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐡𝐨, 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐨𝐤–𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐩. The meeting was chaired by Shri R. K. S***a, Retired Limboo Language Primary Teacher, and was attended by community leaders, language teachers, social activists, departmental personnel, well-wishers, and villagers.

The meeting was attended by Shri Arpan S***a, Panchayat President, 12-Namphing GPU; Shri Som Bdr S***a, Rekep Ward Panchayat; Shri Yog Bdr Limbu, President of Yuma Manghim Tongjem Chumbho, Bermiok-Namphing, Rekep; Shri Bhim Hang S***a, Retired TBO Limboo Language Teacher; Shri Yem Prashad S***a, Retired GT Limboo Teacher, along with many others.

The programme began with a welcome address by Shri Yog Bdr Limbu, President of Yuma Manghim Tongjem Chumbho, who highlighted the significance of Kokfekwa Tongnam and extended a warm welcome to all present.

After detailed deliberations, the house unanimously resolved to constitute a new ad hoc Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration Committee for a period of two years, i.e., 2026 and 2027. Shri R. K. S***a was named Chief Advisor, while Shri Durga Bdr Limbu, Daring Ward Panchayat, was appointed Advisor.

The committee office bearers include Shri Arpan S***a as President, Shri Birta Bdr S***a as Vice President, Shri Bhim Hang S***a as General Secretary, Shri Harka Bdr Limboo and Nanuma Limboo as Joint Secretaries, and Shri Yem Prashad S***a as Treasurer. Shri Yog Bdr Limboo was appointed Chief Co-ordinator and Shri Som Bdr S***a as Programme Co-ordinator. Publicity responsibilities were assigned to Shri Manish Limbu and Smt. Puja S***a, while cultural activities will be overseen by Shri Dil Kumar Rai and Ms. Suk Maya S***a.

Various other responsibilities were also distributed, including sound system management, press and printing, stage management, kitchen and dining arrangements, tea and snacks, ritual management, purchase, electricity, tent arrangements, cooking, and artist coordination. Ms. Shanti S***a was confirmed as the artist for the celebration, and the sound system will be sponsored by Shri Durga S***a (Mondal).

It was further resolved that the next meeting will be held on 5th January 2026 to finalize detailed planning for the celebration, which is proposed to be held at Rekep in the month of January 2026. The final date will be decided subsequently.

Addressing the gathering, President Shri Arpan S***a urged all members of the community to actively participate in making the Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration a grand success and expressed gratitude to everyone for their continued support, especially during last year’s celebration.

Shri Yem Prashad S***a shared his views on Kokfekwa Tongnam and Kokfekwa Tumyen, explaining why Kokfekwa Tongnam is observed instead of Kokfekwa Tumyen (which marks Sankranti, the first day of Kokfekwa). He also presented details of the existing account balance and the financial preparedness for the upcoming celebration.

In his concluding address, Chairperson Shri R. K. S***a appreciated the successful conduct of the meeting and highlighted the origin of Yuma Manghim Tongjem Chumbho, tracing its roots to Sekhmari Chumbho, thereby emphasizing the rich cultural heritage of the Limboo community.

Held from 2nd to 15th August 2025, the celebrations aimed to promote Sikkim’s diverse traditions, languages, and cultures in an inclusive spirit.

Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration Successfully Conducted in Namchi, Sikkim

On 15th January 2025, the Kokfekwa Tongnam celebration was successfully organized by the Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration Committee, Bermiok Namphing, with support from the Yuma Manghim Tongjem Chumbho, Bermiok-Namphing Rekep, Namchi-Sikkim. The festival, held at Rekep, Lower Challamthang in Namchi District, was a vibrant and culturally rich event graced by distinguished guests and attendees.

The Hon'ble MLA of the 14-Temi Namphing Constituency, Shri B. S. Panth, served as the Chief Guest, alongside the Hon'ble MP of Sikkim, Shri Indra Hang Limboo as the Chief Patron and Shri Karma S***a, OSD to HCM. Also in attendance were Shri G.M. Gurung, former minister; Shri Prem Kumar S***a, SDM Soreng; Shri Gopal Chettri, Joint Secretary, Namchi District; Shri Phurba Tshering Bhutia, CLC of Temi-Namphing Constituency; Shri Madan Kumar Bajgai, Zilla Panchayat of Bermiok Namphing Territorial; Smt. Sanki Bhutia, Panchayat President of 13-Bermiok Tokal GPU; and representatives from the 12-Namphing GPU and 13th-Bermiok Tokal GPU, along with various government officials, bureaucrats, and well-wishers.

The event began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the Hon'ble MLA, followed by the offering of a Pagha to the Chief Guest. Shri Arpan S***a, President of the Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration Committee, delivered a thoughtful welcome speech. This was followed by an insightful introduction to Kokfekwa Tongnam by Shri Karna Hang Tamling.

The program included an array of cultural performances, beginning with the Hena Moma ritual and a captivating Ke Lang dance by the Sewa Samaj of Reshep, Middle Namphing, and Rekep. Highlights included a Palam performance by Numa Limbu, a Limboo dance by the Rekep Group, and a Tumyang Hang Samloo by Aita Hang Limboo. Additional cultural displays featured Nepali songs by Rabina Limbu and dance performances by Anjana Nalboo and Prajna Tamang.

Shri Bhim Hang S***a delivered a detailed report on Yuma Mangheem Tongjem Chumbho, followed by a segment of appreciation and gratitude, where letters were presented to various contributors, including P.K. S***a (SDM Soreng) and Jitendra Limboo (sports person).

The Chief Patron delivered an inspiring speech, followed by the acknowledgment of patrons and other key figures through the offering of Miktok. The event concluded with a speech by the Chief Guest, Shri B. S. Panth, and the Phudong Tomma ceremony.

Night Program:
The evening saw lively musical performances by talented singers from Nepal, adding a grand finale to the celebration. The event was a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Limboo community, leaving attendees with lasting memories of tradition and unity.

The Kokfekwa Tongnam celebration was lauded for its meticulous organization and vibrant display of culture, reinforcing the spirit of togetherness and reverence for heritage.

Kokfekwa Tongnam: A Grand Celebration of Limboo New Year Scheduled for Tomorrow

Rekep, Lower Challamthang, Namchi, January 14, 2025 – Preparations are in full swing for the much-anticipated celebration of the Limboo New Year, Kokfekwa Tongnam, scheduled to take place tomorrow at Rekep. Organized by the Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration Committee, the event promises a day rich in culture, tradition, and festivities.

The celebration began this evening with the commencement of the sacred Tongsing ritual, conducted by Limboo Yeba Mr. Munnu Hang S***a from Thambong, West Sikkim, and Yema Miss Resmika S***a from Tikpur, West Sikkim. Adding to the excitement, the Celebration Committee has warmly welcomed the invited singers, including Raju Limbu, Rabina Limbu, Numa Anusha Neyong, and others, who will perform at tomorrow’s grand concert.

The highlight of the celebration will be the cultural concert featuring these renowned Limboo singers from Nepal, who will captivate the audience with their exceptional renditions of traditional Limboo songs. The event will also include a variety of Limboo cultural performances, showcasing the community’s rich heritage.

The celebration will be graced by Shri B.S. Panth, Hon’ble MLA of the 14-Temi Namphing Constituency, as the Chief Guest. Let's inebriate with our Limbu language and culture and taste the flavour of our Limbu food and beverage in this upcoming Kokfekwa Tongnam, Limbu New Year.

Showcasing renowned Limbu artists from Nepal, Numa Anusa Neyong (Palam Singer) and Rabina Angdambay, one of the Yakthung Star 2 finalists, are performing typical traditional music in the festive, especially Palam and Limbu songs. Featuring a special music performance covering Y***k, Kelang, Palam, Khyali and Hakpare.

For the first time in Temi-Namphing Constituency, Kokfekwa Tongnam is being celebrated through the organizing committee, Kokfekwa Tongnam Celebration Committee in support of Yuma Manghim Tonjem Chumbho, at Rekep, Lower Challamthang, Near Adarsh Goan, Singtam, Namchi-Sikkim, on 15th January 2025.

Trying to revive our Limbu tradition, culture, language and literature under erasure. The festival will strive to celebrate in a natural and organic way on a trial-and-error basis using leaf plates, leaf bowls, bamboo cups and vessels, staying away from foreign liquors, and endeavouring to use locally available resources. Further, the Tongsing ritual will be performed through the proficient Limbu Priests (Fedangbas/Sambas), who will worship for the well-being of every individual.

Everyone is welcome to the celebration of Kokfekwa Tongnam, Limbu New Year, and your presence pinch in our tradition and cultural preservation in the upcoming days.

𝑵𝒂𝒎𝒄𝒉𝒊, 𝑱𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒂𝒓𝒚 2, 2025: Yuma Manghim Tonjem Chumbho (YMTC) Bermiok-Namphing Rekep held its second preparatory meeting at the residence of Mr. Bhim Hang S***a, a retired TBO/Limboo, Namphing, presided over by Mr Yog Bdr Limbu, YMTC President. The meeting focused on organizing the upcoming Kokfekwa Tongnam (Limboo New Year) celebration, which is scheduled to take place at Rekep (Lower Challamthang), Near Adarsh Goan, Singtam.

The meeting was attended by prominent figures, including Mr. Apran S***a, President of the Kokfekwa Celebration Adhoc Committee (KCAC) and Panchayat President of Namphing GPU; Mrs. Hema Devi Chettri, Culture Coordinator of KCAC and Vice Panchayat President of Namphing GPU; Mr. Mani Kumar Bhujel, Ward Panchayat of Middle Namphing GPU; retired TBO/Limboo, KCAC members, retired teachers, employees, social workers, Social Media Reporters, youth, local gentries, and well-wishers.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱:

1. 𝑪𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑫𝒂𝒕𝒆: The festival date has been postponed from January 14, 2025, to January 15, 2025.

2. 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒆 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔: Responsibilities were allocated among committee members for tea and snacks, lunch, stage maintenance, decorations, cultural arrangements, invitations, banners, and other tasks.

3. 𝑵𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑷𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒔: The Chief Patron and other Patrons will be nominated, with their names to be disclosed later.

4. 𝑪𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔: The event will showcase performances rooted in Limboo tradition, including Y***k, Kelang, Hakpare, and Khyeli. Notably, some artists from outside Sikkim will also participate.

5. 𝑻𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒚: A traditional Tongsing ritual will be held in the name of the KCAC President, open to all participants for support and blessings.

6. 𝑭𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈: The committee is raising funds for the event and encourages contributions from all well-wishers.

7. 𝑨𝒍𝒄𝒐𝒉𝒐𝒍 𝑷𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒚: Foreign liquors are strictly prohibited during the celebration. Only locally prepared Tinpaney Rakshi and Chhanwa Jar (fermented millet wine) will be served.

8. 𝑶𝒑𝒆𝒏 𝑰𝒏𝒗𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: The festival warmly welcomes everyone to join and enjoy the festivities on January 15, 2025.

The event aims to preserve and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Limboo community, fostering unity and tradition. Preparations are in full swing, ensuring a vibrant and memorable Kokfekwa Tongnam celebration.

On December 29, 2024, a general meeting was convened by the Yuma Manghim Tongjem Chumbho (YMTC) of Bermiok-Namphing Rekep, under the chairmanship of Shri Kamal Bdr Limboo and presided over by Shri Yog Bdr Limbu (President, YMTC) at Rekep. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒂 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑲𝒐𝒌𝒇𝒆𝒌𝒘𝒂 𝑻𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒏𝒂𝒎 (ᤁᤁ᤻ᤑᤧᤰᤘᤠ ᤋᤱᤏᤠᤶ), 𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑱𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒂𝒓𝒚 14, 2025. This meeting was attended by Shri Arpan S***a (Panchayat President, 12th Namphing GPU), Mrs Hema Devi Chettri (Vice-Panchayat President, Upper Namphing), Shri Durga Bdr Limbu (Daring Ward Panchayat), Mani Kumar Bhujel (Middle Namphing Ward Panchayat) Shri Bhim Hang S***a, retired TBO/Limboo, Shri R.K. S***a (retired PRT Limboo), Shri Nar Bir Limbu sir, Dr. Sanjiv S***a, teachers, social activists, well-wishers, dignitaries and other local people.

During the meeting, an 𝑨𝒅 𝒉𝒐𝒄 𝑲𝒐𝒌𝒇𝒆𝒌𝒘𝒂 𝑻𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒏𝒂𝒎 𝑪𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒆𝒅, 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑺𝒉𝒓𝒊 𝑨𝒓𝒑𝒂𝒏 𝑺𝒖𝒃𝒃𝒂 𝒂𝒔 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕, 𝑺𝒉𝒓𝒊 𝑩𝒉𝒊𝒎 𝑯𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒖𝒃𝒃𝒂 𝒂𝒔 𝑽𝒊𝒄𝒆-𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕, 𝑺𝒉𝒓𝒊 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒂 𝑲𝒆𝒓𝒖𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒔 𝑮𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒚, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒉𝒓𝒊 𝒀𝒂𝒎 𝑷𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒂𝒅 𝑺𝒖𝒃𝒃𝒂 𝒂𝒔 𝑻𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒓. 𝑷𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝑨𝒓𝒖𝒏 𝑳𝒊𝒎𝒃𝒐𝒐 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝑳𝒊𝒎𝒃𝒖, 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒆 𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝒄𝒐𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝑴𝒓𝒔. 𝑯𝒆𝒎𝒂 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒊 𝑪𝒉𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒓𝒊, 𝑴𝒓𝒔. 𝑺𝒊𝒕𝒂 𝑳𝒊𝒎𝒃𝒖, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑴𝒔. 𝑷𝒖𝒋𝒂 𝑳𝒊𝒎𝒃𝒐𝒐. 𝑨𝒍𝒍 𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒕𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑵𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑮𝑷𝑼, 𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑹𝒖𝒃𝒆𝒏 𝑺𝒖𝒃𝒃𝒂 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒋 𝑺𝒖𝒃𝒃𝒂, 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒔 𝑨𝒅𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒓𝒔. Additional duties such as maintenance, decoration, catering, stationery, and sanitation were also assigned to specific individuals to ensure the smooth ex*****on of the celebration. A fundraising initiative was launched during the meeting, with contributions welcome from all; interested benefactors may contact the Treasurer.

It was unanimously decided that Kokfekwa Tongnam would be celebrated at Rekep, Namchi District (Near Singtam) on January 14, 2025. The celebration aims to revive and promote Limboo traditions, food practices, culture, and customs, ensuring their preservation for future generations.
