Mount Carmel Petit Seminary Fort Cochin Home Away From Home Milestones In The History of MCPS

The Roman Pontiff, Pope Paul VI, established Cochin Dioceseon 4th February 1557. Rt. Rev.

The Diocese at that time had spread fromMalabar to Kanyakumari, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh,Burma, Hongkong, Malacca and Macau. The Formation of candidates to priesthood of the Diocese was given in cities such as Cochin, Cranganore and Goa. When theDiocese was annexed to the Vicariate of Verapoly, the forma-tion was given in Verapoly Seminary. Later the formation programme became well organized an

d contextualized by startinga new seminary, the Sacred Heart Seminary on 7th May 1870 in Alleppey. Even when the Diocese of Cochin was restored to its formerstatus in 1886 by separating it from the Vicariate of Verapoly, the only seminary the Diocese of Cochin had was the one inAlleppey. Later it was used as major as well as minor seminaryof the Diocese of Cochin. In 1952 when the diocese of Alleppey was erected comprising the southern part of the Diocese of Cochin, the Sacred-Heart Seminary naturally came under the Diocese of Alleppey.Cochin Diocese had to bring back the seminarians to Fort-Cochin and an old building at the present Bishop’s House ofthe Diocese of Cochin was temporarily arranged as the minor seminary. On 28th December 1957, the foundation stone for the new Minor seminary was laid, commemorating the Fourth centenary of the er****on of the Diocese of Cochin

On 11th February, 1960, the new building of the Mount Carmel Petit Seminary was blessed by His Ex. Dr. Alexander Edezhath, the first native Bishop of Cochin Diocese. The new study hall and dormitory were completed in the year 1962. The seminary has the capacity to accommodate 40 students at a time. The solemn blessing of Mount Carmel Petit Seminary was done on 28th July, 1962 by the Most Rev. James Robert Knox, the Apostolic Pronuncio to India. On the 1st January 1980, Bishop Joseph Kureethara blessed the new seminary chapel. The diocese of Cochin is greatly indebted for the zealous and holy priests to Mount Carmel Petit Seminary.
