Saint Joseph Vaz and the Diocese of Cochin
Saint Joseph Vaz (1651–1711), the great apostle of Sri Lanka and the first canonised saint of Goa, shares a deep and historically significant connection with the Diocese of Cochin. His missionary journey, priestly formation, and pastoral vision were closely linked with Cochin, which at that time was a vital centre of Catholic life on the Malabar Coast.
During the 17th century, the Church in Sri Lanka was undergoing severe persecution under Dutch Calvinist rule. Catholic priests were expelled, churches destroyed, and the faithful left without shepherds. It was in this historical context that Saint Joseph Vaz, moved by deep missionary zeal, offered himself to serve the suffering Church of Sri Lanka.
Before embarking on his dangerous mission, Joseph Vaz came to Cochin, which was then under Dutch control but still retained a strong Catholic presence. Cochin became an important base for his missionary preparations. Here, he strengthened his spiritual life, sought guidance, and made practical arrangements for his journey. It was from the region connected to Cochin that he secretly set sail to Sri Lanka in 1687, disguised as a poor labourer, trusting entirely in Divine Providence.
The Diocese of Cochin thus played a crucial role as a gateway to the mission of Sri Lanka. The faith, courage, and missionary spirit of the Church in Cochin supported and inspired Saint Joseph Vaz in his apostolic undertaking. His departure from this coastal region symbolises Cochin’s long-standing missionary outlook and its contribution to the universal Church.
Saint Joseph Vaz’s life and mission continue to inspire the Diocese of Cochin. His total dedication to Christ, love for the persecuted Church, simplicity of life, and unwavering trust in God stand as a powerful model for priests, religious, and laity alike. For the Diocese of Cochin, he remains a shining example of missionary discipleship and pastoral charity.
Today, the Diocese of Cochin honours Saint Joseph Vaz not only as a heroic missionary saint but also as a spiritual son whose mission was nurtured on its soil. His legacy reminds the Diocese of its call to be a Church that goes forth—courageous in faith, generous in service, and missionary in spirit.
