A Jesuit Commentary!
Nanquan Cuts the Cat (Parts 1-3, complete)

May 13th, 2026.

At least nine Jesuits have been authorized to teach the koan curriculum, which is by far the largest representation of any specific religious order among Zen teachers, but there haven’t been any Jesuit commentaries on the koans. Today, the opening of Parliament in the UK began with a ceremonial search of the Palace of Westminster's basement, a nod to the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, which is also known as the Jesuit Treason. I will take the occasion to write a thoroughly Jesuitical* commentary.

Beware of Lounge Chair Zazen, A Kamakura Zendo: I currently live in Thailand, a Buddhist monarchy. The king and royal family enjoy the highest rank. Protocol, to my eyes, seems strictly observed despite rumors that the royals are not insistent. It also provides context for examining Hakuin’s famous statement: "Anyone who would call himself a member of the Zen family must first achieve kensho—realization of the Buddha's way. If a person who has not achieved kensho says he is a follower of Zen he is an outrageous fraud. A swindler pure and simple."
