Here are some key points about this sacred site:

Historical Significance: The temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, which are considered the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva1. According to legend, it was initially built by the Pandavas from the Mahabharata.

Location and Accessibility: Situated at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet), it is the highest among the twelve Jyotirlingas1. The temple is not directly accessible by road and requires a 22-kilometer (14-mile) uphill trek from Gaurikund.

Architectural Style: The temple is built in the North-Indian Himalayan architectural style, characterized by its stone construction and intricate carvings.

Seasonal Access: Due to extreme weather conditions, the temple is open to the public only between April (Akshaya Tritiya) and November (Kartik Purnima)1. During the winter months, the deity is moved to Ukhimath for worship.

2013 Flash Floods: The temple and its surroundings were heavily affected by the 2013 flash floods, but the main structure of the temple remained largely intact, protected by a large rock that diverted the debris
