Sthānakawāsī (Sanskrit: स्थानकवासी) is a sect of Jainism founded by a merchant named Lavaji in 1653 CE that believes soul is nirakar "without form", and hence do not worship idols. मध्य युग में सुदीर्घकालीन यहाँ तक कि बारह-बारह वर्षों तक के कई दुष्काल पडे। उन विकट-विषम परिस्थितियों में साधु धर्म का पालन कठिन हो गया और साधु समुदाय अलग-अलग घटकों में बंटकर केन्द्रीय स्थान से अलग-अलग दिशाओं में चल पडा। समय पाकर कई संगठनों में बाह्य आडम्बर, प्रदर्शन, पद प्रतिष्ठा, लोक रुचि और यशोलिप्सा का भाव प्रमुख बन गया। और आत्म साधना का पक्ष पीछे छूट गया, पर जो आत्मनिष्ठ साधक थे वे अपनी सुदृढ चारित्रनिष्ठा और संयम साधना के प्रति सचेत रहकर बाह्य क्रिया काण्डों और पूजा प्रतिष्ठानों के खिलाफ अपनी आवाज बुलन्द कर साधुमार्ग की पवित्रता को अक्षुण्ण रखते गये। इसी ऐतिहासिक परिप्रेक्ष में सोलहवीं सदी में धर्मवीर क्रान्तिकारी लोंकाशाह जिन्होंने तत्कालीन बाह्य क्रियाकाण्ड एवं शिथिलाचार के खिलाफ क्रान्ति और विशुद्ध साधुमार्ग का प्रतिपादन किया। इनसे प्रेरणा पाकर 45 श्रावक दीक्षित हुए और स्थानकवासी परंपरा प्रचलन में आई|
