Though India attained independence on 15 August 1947, it was on 26 January 1950 that the nation truly came into its own—declaring itself a Sovereign, Democratic Republic with the adoption of its Constitution.
On this historic day, a 21-gun salute and the unfurling of the Indian National Flag by Dr. Rajendra Prasad marked the birth of the Indian Republic. Henceforth, 26 January was proclaimed a national holiday and came to be celebrated as Republic Day of India.
The Constitution empowered the citizens of India to choose their own government and laid the firm foundation of democracy. On this momentous occasion, Dr. Rajendra Prasad took the oath as the first President of India, ushering in a new era of self-governance, justice, and unity.
