Sahastra Bahu Temple (Saas Bahu) Gwalior Fort

The history of the Fort goes back to the fifth century AD or perhaps still earlier and the old name of the hill as recorded in ancient Sanskrit inscriptions is Gopagiri.

The main monuments which are in the premises of Gwalior fort are Man Mandir, Teli-Ka-Mandir, Sas Bhau Temple, Badal Mahal, Alamgiri gate, Ganesa gate, Chaturbhuj gate, Rock-cut Jain collosi, Urwai gate, etc.

Among the earliest architectural efforts the Teli ka Mandir definitely stands as the earliest one being dated conformably to the 8th century AD A hallmark feature of this temple is the imposing superstructure of a mixed type, showing a Valabhi shikara on a Nagara base.

It has witnessed varying fortunes of the Guptas, Hunas, the Pratiharas, the Kachhwahas, the Tomars, the Pathans, the Mughals and the Marathas who have left their landmarks in the various monuments which are still preserved.

Chaturbhuj temple is another early temple of this site being securely dated to AD 875. It stands as the only monolithic rock cut temple in the entire region.

In the hill fort the twin Vaishnava temple known as Sas Bahu constructed during the reign of the Kachchapghattas marks the culmination of artistic endeavours marked by extravagant ornamentation.

Jainism also thrived conspicuously especially during the reign of the Tomars as understood the large number of gigantic Jaina tirthankara images from images on both sides of the Urwahi Road and rock cut Jain colossies, including at Ek Pathar ki Baodi.

The Palace of Raja Man Singh, a great patron of architecture, is an interesting example of Hindu Architecture, incorporating elements commonly in vogue, in Islamic architecture.

This Beautiful and Flawless Sculpture is from the Rani Ki Vav, situated in the town of Patan in Gujarat.

Varaha Avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu Ji. He strikes a heroic pose as he lifts Bhumi-devi off the ocean.

Built during the 11th century AD by Queen Udayamati as a memorial to her husband, King Bhimdev I, this stepwell is not just a source of water but a stunning work of art and engineering.

Rani ki vav is not your average stepwell. The depth of the well is a staggering 27 meters, and it is adorned with over 7,000 beautifully carved sandstone sculptures.

It boasts intricate carvings, grand pavilions, and a magnificent seven-tiered structure that descends deep into the ground.

As you descend into the well, the sculptures appear to be larger than life, creating an awe-inspiring visual spectacle. Rani ki Vav houses a network of elaborate chambers and galleries.

These underground spaces were used for various purposes, including religious rituals, social gatherings, and as a refuge from the scorching heat of the region.

It was rediscovered in the 1940s, and extensive restoration work has been done to preserve its beauty and historical significance.

This World Heritage Site is not only a testament to the vision and skills of the artisans of yesteryears but also a reflection of the cultural and architectural prowess of ancient India.

Airavatesvara TempleтАЩs Optical Illusion (Kumbakonam)

The Airavatesvara temple complex, built by Rajaraja II, at Darasuram features a 24-m vimana and a stone image of Shiva.

Among the intricate carvings dated between 1146 and 1170 is an elephant or a bull?

After more than 900 years, it remains a key surviving example of Chola architecture and craftsmanship (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

But what makes the temple all the more exceptional is that within this craftsmanship is one of the worldтАЩs oldest optical illusions.

The bas-relief depicts the two separate animal bodies, with their heads overlapping and merged to become one shared aspect of the two figures.

This results in the visual trickery. When you solely focus on the left-hand animal, you will see a complete bull, including horns;

however, when you focus solely on the right-hand animal, you will see a complete elephant, including a trunk.

The Airavatesvara Shiva temple has a water tank, has a connected channel that brings in Cauveri River water where Hindus gather annually to take a dip.

The local people narrates how Airavata ( Indra's malla) white elephant was restored to clean, white skin after he took a dip in this tank.

While this is one of the most well-preserved examples of its age, similar images can be seen at the Vijaya Vittala Temple in Hampi as well as Rameshwaram Temple on Rameshwaram Island.

This Hindu motif is thought by some to depict the half-male, half-female (Ardhanarishvara) form of Lord Shiva, while others similarly consider it to represent unity among the deities of Hindu faith.

Simhachalam Temple Visakhapatnam

The abode of Sri Varahalakshmi Narasimha Swami; Simhachalam is a well-known hilltop temple located in the city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

The full name of the temple is Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, and it is one of the eighteen "Narasimha Kshetras", the shrines of Lord Narasimha, in Bharat.

The name "Simhachalam" can be broken down into "Simha" meaning lion, "Achala" meaning hill, and together they mean "Lion's Hill".

The deity here, Lord Narasimha, is an avatar of Lord Vishnu who is depicted as part human, part lion.

The temple is renowned for its architectural grandeur, embodying the Kalinga style of architecture also known as Shimadri temple.

Some people believe that the temple was built in the 11th century by the King Sri Krishnadevarayam.

Inscriptions in the temple date back to 1098 AD. Different inscriptions have the names of different rulers at different times.

All these ancient inscriptions of the temple are the proof of the antiquity of the shrine (the hill of the lion).

A unique feature of this temple is the ritual of "Nijaroopa Darshanam" (viewing the deity's true form).

Usually, the deity is covered with pure sandalwood paste throughout the year. You can have the glance of the deity without sandalwood only for 12 hours per year. That is the day of Akshaya Trithiya.

On the same day, after 12 hours, the deity becomes re-covered with pure sandalwood paste. This ritual is known as the Chandana Visarjana.

Gyanvapi; Witnessing Nandi Baba

The present structure of the temple has been rebuilt over time. The first initiative was taken by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar.

Baiza Bai, widow of the Maratha ruler Daulat Rao Scindhia of Gwalior further expanded the Kashi Vishwanath temple followed by more expansion ater under the patronage of Hindu rulers and traders.

The Raja of Nepal gifted a 7-foot high stone statue of Nandi bull to be installed. Bhosales of Nagpur donated silver.

The One Tonne gold used for plating the dome of the shrine was donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

These surviving elements contain influences of Mughal architectural style on the original temple.

Skanda Purana comprises seven chapters (khanda). Chapter four, titled 'Kashi Khanda' is split into two sections. Sage Agastya say about the water in this well thus,

тАЬThe sparkling water like the minds of good people, excessively sweet like the divine nectar, pleasant to the touch like the limb of a cow, scent excelled the sweet smell of lotusтАЭ.

This statement is recorded by Sage Vyasadeva in Skanda Purana. The seeker have named it тАЬGyan Vapi" the Well of Wisdom. The water has the wisdom and insight in the form of liquid, the water.

The Kashi territory is the largest; the Varanasi area is a relatively smaller region between the Varana and the AsiтАФtwo tributaries of river Ganga.

Inside Varanasi territory, a still smaller region is called as Avimukta. However, as per Skanda Purana, Varanasi and Avimukta are synonyms.

Nandi keeping vigilance to the events sitting quietly unmoved for more than two millennium.

Auspicious Festival of Thai Poosam

The day on which Lord Muruga (Subrahmanya) received the Vel - which is a divine and powerful spear from his mother Goddess Parvati

- to destroy the Asuras Soora Padma and his brothers who had imprisoned the Devas for a long time.

At many south Indian temples trenches of burning coals is laid out for devotees to walk over /celebrated with joy and fervour especially in South India.

People who volunteer to undertake this experience with faith, come away unharmed and unscathed.

Kavadi Attam is a dance performed by the devotees during the ceremonial worship of Murugan.

It is often performed during the festival of Thaipusam through which the devotees implore for help from the God Murugan.

The kavadis are borne by common folk as well as by millionaires who are otherwise confined to their air-conditioned suites.

They all come walking (without footwear) to Palani in groups from their homes at a distance of about a hundred miles while scores and scores of empty limousines follow them.

Crowds line the entire route, cheer the kavadi bearers and offer them tender coconut drinks in praise of their display of courage and determination.

The verse is 27th shloka in Ramraksha Stotra. As per Padma Puran, the author of Ramraksha is Vishwamitra rishi,

Who is also known as Budhakaushik (because he belongs to Kaushik clan as Mahadev came into his dream and asked to compose so.

The names taken in the shloka are:

Ram - the name of Lord itself.

Rambhadra - Ram + Bhadra (bhadra = auspicious, well doer)

Ramchandra - Ram + Chandra (as Bhagwan bless the Moon that their names will be taken attched during Ramavatar)

рд╡реЗрдзрд╕реН - Vedhas - Epithet of Bhagwan Brahma, One Who Knows Everything, Brahmaswarup, Universal

Raghunath - Nath (leader/God/One above all) of Raghu vansh/lineage

Nath - God, Leader, Swami, our Guardian

Sitapati - Husband (pati) of Mata Sita (Avatar of Mata Lakshmi)

In sanskrut, in this shloka, all the names of Bhagwan Ram have been used in chaturthi Or dative case.

That implies Ramay = For Ram. Because in last the word namah - рдирдордГ (Bow, salutation) is used and with that only dative case of words should be used.

Dasharatha callings Rama

Kousaluya- Ramabhadra

Kaikeyi - RamaChandra

Vasista - Vedase

Rishi- Raghunatha

Sita - Natha

Janaka - Seetapathi

So in total, Rushi Budhkaushik has called Ram by all those names in this shloka and saying that he (we) bow for/(our) solutions for Bhagwan Ram.

The one who chants this hymn is protected by shree ram,and gains the benefit of performing Aswamedha yagna(horse sacrifice)

Ghats of Ayodhya; Guptar Ghat

At a distance of 10 km from Ayodhya Junction, Guptar Ghat is a holy ghat situated on the banks of River Saryu in Faizabad near Ayodhya.

On the top of the Ghats there are the Sita-Ram Temple, the Chakrahari and the Guptahari shrines, and the Narasingh Temple.

The devotees taking a dip in this ghat believe that the sacred waters of the Saryu river in which Sri Rama left His earthly body, will wash away their sins and lessen their worldly worries.

Guptar Ghat has a series of well-maintained ghats built in the first half of the 19th century by Raja Darshan Singh.

Religious place to visit where lord Rama took his last dip, still under development process, around 13 km from Sri Ramjanmbhoomi Mandir. Sri RamaтАЩs association with Ayodhya is for Eternity.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Tiruchirapalli, TN

Constructed in the Dravidian architectural style, the temple is glorified by Alvars in their Naalayira Divya Prabhandam,

And has the unique distinction of being the foremost among the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to the Shri Vishnu.

The largest functioning Hindu temple is spread over an area of about 155 acres within a perimeter of 4 km.

The rajagopuram or temple tower is nothing less than an architectural grandeur, located at 237 feet above the complex base, moving up in 11 ascending tiers.

In 9th century A.D. , the Gangas built this temple. The Gangas was the ruling dynasty based at Talakkadu on the banks of the Kaveri River.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple has seen rampaging attacks from the Islamic armies and European conquerors and it had to be rebuilt in the 14th century.

The temple houses the ancient inscriptions not just in Tamil, but also in other languages like, Sanskrit, Telegu, Marathi, Odia and Kannada.

The temple complex has over 800 inscriptions that give insights into the various religious and social influences during the medieval era.

The archaeological evidences state that the inscriptions belong to the Indian dynasties of Chola, Pandya, Hoysala and Vijayanagara.

The temple has 7 parikramas or compound with 81 shrines, 21 stunning gopurams and 39 grand pavilions.

The massive temple complex has a Hall consisting of 1000 Pillars.

One of the attractions of the temple is the monolithic pillars, depicting sculptures of warriors in action.

The granite structured complex also features a water tank in the centre platform of the magnificent hall.

One of the main attractions of the temple is the reclining idol of Lord Vishnu.

A unique feature of the idol is that it is crafted using stucco and thailam, a paste made of musk, camphor, honey, jaggery and sandal.

The temple complex houses several water tanks and granaries.

Out of 12 water tanks, a special mention should be given to the surya soc and Chandra pushkarani as these two water tanks can hold as much as two million litres of water.

The temple complex also houses several chariots namely Garuda vahana, Simha vahana, Hanumantha vahana, and Sesha vahan which deserve special mention as they are used during festivals and various religious occasions.

The annual 21 days festival attracts more than 1 million visitors every year. This is one of the must visit festivals in south India.

As per legend, Alauddin KhiljiтАЩs general, Malik Kafur, invaded the region and stole the main idol in the 13th century. The idol was taken to Delhi.

The devotees of the Srirangam temple travelled to Delhi and convinced the emperor with their melodramatic behaviour to retune the idol.

The idol was returned back to the main temple after 60 years.

The walls of the temple complex are painted with exquisite paintings using herbal and vegetable dyes.
