"Some inequalities are not loud.
They live quietly in everyday words, rituals, expectations, and family habits."
In this reflective article, Questioning the Everyday: Gender, Culture, and Family Life, Dr. Murari explores how families shape our understanding of gender, power, care, and equality
- often in ways we hardly notice.
The article invites us to look closely at the ordinary spaces of life:
the conversations at home, the roles we inherit, the language we use, and the values we pass on to the next generation.

Many may still be inclined to believe that wisdom comes with age alone, but I think wisdom arises from diverse experiences and lived realities. So when we work with young people, let us not measure in terms of years of experiences, but with their lived realities as young people are amazingly adept, profoundly connected and building movements towards the revival of our communities.

From Command to Conversation: The Changing Nature of Family Decisions

In a new reflection on reimagining family decision-making, Mr. Suchit Tripathi explores the shift from authority-based choices toward a culture of consultation within the family, where dialogue and shared understanding shape decisions.

This is an insightful article on consultation in the family and how children can participate in family consultations and decision making. It highlights that decision-making is not merely about choosing between options, but about learning to think and act together while valuing each voice.

The Road to Equality Begins with Small Steps

“The road is long. Patriarchy is stubborn. But with each conversation, each negotiation, each baby step, we see families becoming more equal and more humane. And that is how change will endure.

We must be honest: patriarchy is deeply entrenched. Older generations, especially men, often resist change because they fear losing power. Sometimes crises—like lack of toilets or severe family conflicts—force shifts. But otherwise, change is slow. Women often understand the harm of patriarchy but cannot act; instead, they make space for the next generation.

We realized we had to work with youth. While the current generation needs immediate support when violence occurs, the next generation must be prepared not to tolerate violence at all.”
— V. Kalyani
Chairperson, Action India

In a new article on Reimagining the Family, Ms. Kalyani reflects on the deeply entrenched nature of patriarchy and the gradual process through which families and communities work toward more just and equal relationships.

The piece highlights how honest conversations, small negotiations, and the engagement of youth can play a crucial role in transforming patterns that sustain inequality and violence within families.

If a young person has the responsibility to take leadership in every space and sphere, then they must also have the right to participate in decision-making in those spaces. If they are entrusted with the task of fostering fraternity and peace and building positive relationships, then they must also be given spaces that allow them to discover themselves, engage with society, and understand diversity. Without such opportunities, how can anyone be expected to build true fraternity?

What Children Learn Before School Matters the Most
"When children grow up seeing fathers actively participating in domestic responsibilities, they internalize those patterns. Boys who witness such involvement are far more likely to contribute fairly within their own households later in life. These are not abstract ideas; they are realities I have seen repeatedly in families we have worked with. Even in my own home, small moments remind me how powerful early modeling can be."
- Arvind Singh
Director, Matri Sudha
In a new article on Reimagining the Family, Arvind Singh reflects on how the earliest experiences within the family shape children's values, relationships, and the kind of society they grow up to build.
The piece highlights why what children observe and learn before school can have a lasting impact on their attitudes, behaviour, and understanding of shared responsibility.
