26 Second Avenue: The Birthplace of ISKCON

On 13th July 1966, in a small rented storefront at 26 Second Avenue, New York, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).

With no material wealth, no institutional backing, and carrying only the priceless treasure of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Srila Prabhupada crossed the ocean to fulfill the order of his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, to spread Krishna consciousness throughout the world.

What began in a humble storefront has now become a worldwide spiritual movement, bringing the chanting of the Hare Krishna Mahā-mantra, the wisdom of Bhagavad-gītā As It Is and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, prasādam, and devotional service to millions across the globe.

When some suggested calling it “God Consciousness,” Srila Prabhupada firmly retained the name Krishna Consciousness, preserving the authenticity of the Vedic conclusion that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The Seven Purposes of ISKCON

1. To systematically educate all people in spiritual knowledge.
2. To propagate Krishna consciousness as revealed in Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
3. To bring the members of society closer to Lord Krishna and to one another.
4. To teach and encourage the congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna Mahā-mantra.
5. To establish holy places dedicated to the transcendental pastimes of Lord Krishna.
6. To teach a simpler and more natural way of life centered on devotional service.
7. To publish and distribute transcendental literature for the benefit of humanity.

A small storefront changed the world because one pure devotee had unwavering faith in Guru and Krishna.

1. According to Padma Purana, the worship of Lord Vishnu on Shukla Ekadashi of the month of Ashadh has special significance because on this day the sleep of the Lord begins.

2. According to Vedic texts, the sleep of Lord Hari is also called Yoga Nidra. On this day, Lord Mahavishnu falls asleep in Ksheersagar.

3. Chaturmas, which is the four-month period of self-control according to the Hindu Calendar, begins from Devasayani Ekadashi itself.

When Lord Jagannatha moves along the road on His Rathayatra car, at every step large assemblies of brahmanas loudly chant prayers and sing Songs for His pleasure. Hearing their hymns, Lord Jagannatha becomes very favorably disposed toward them. He is the ocean of mercy and the true friend of all the worlds. May that Jagannatha Svami, along with His consort Laksmi, who was born from the ocean of nectar, be the object of my vision.

In His left hand Lord Jagannatha holds a flute, on His head He wears peacock feathers, and on His hips He wears fine yellow silken cloth. From the corners of His eyes He bestows sidelong glances upon His loving devotees, and He always reveals Himself through His pastimes in His divine abode of Vrndavana. May that Jagannatha Svami be the object of my vision.

Sometimes in great happiness Lord Jagannatha makes a loud concert with His flute in the groves on the banks of the Yamuna. He is like a bumblebee tasting the beautiful lotus like faces of the cowherd damsels of Vraja, and great personalities such as Laksmi, Siva, Brahma, Indra, and Ganesa worship His lotus feet. May that Jagannatha Svami be the object of my vision.
