Today at Guru Sakya Monastery, we celebrated Choekhor Düchen, the Festival of Turning the Wheel of Dharma, commemorating Buddha Shakyamuni’s first teaching of the Four Noble Truths at Sarnath.

On this sacred occasion, the Sangha performed the Maha Vairocana Puja, while monks and lay practitioners gathered for prayers, meditation, and offerings.

We dedicate the multiplied merit of these virtuous actions to the welfare and happiness of all beings. May everyone receive peace, wisdom, and compassion on this auspicious day.

Yesterday, on the 15th day of the 5th lunar month, the Annual Summer Retreat, known as Yarney, began at Guru Sakya Monastery.

This sacred tradition is a precious time for the
monastic community to remain within the monastery and devote themselves wholeheartedly to Dharma study, meditation, prayer, and spiritual practice.

During Yarney, the monks observe special vows and maintain strict monastic discipline,
deepening their commitment to the path of wisdom and compassion.

May the merit of this Yarney retreat bring peace, happiness, and benefit to all sentient beings.🙏
May all beings be free from suffering and attain lasting peace.

We are pleased to offer the opportunity to share in the virtuous activities of this year’s annual early-starting (Yar Ngama) ‘Rainy Season Summer Retreat’ at Guru Sakya monastery, Darjeeling, India, to be held from June 29th to August 12th, 2026. The Event:

The summer retreat is a sacred tradition established by the Buddha Shakyamuni. During this time, the monks remain within the monastery and concentrate exclusively on study and practice. Special vows are taken and strict discipline is followed by all of the monks. This is considered an especially meritorious time when it is traditional for lay followers to participate by making offerings for the monks’ food and tea during the period of retreat.

🙏 Mahavairocana Puja Concludes at Guru Sakya Monastery 🙏

Today marked the final day of the Mahavairocana Puja at Guru Sakya Monastery. In a traditional closing ceremony, the sacred sand mandala was ritually dismantled, symbolizing the impermanence of all phenomena and spreading blessings to all sentient beings.

This event concluded our observances of Saga Dawa, the sacred month commemorating the Buddha’s enlightenment. May the merit accumulated through this practice bring peace, compassion, wisdom, and awakening to all beings.

Saga Dawa, the most sacred month in the Tibetan Buddhist calendar, was celebrated at Guru Sakya Monastery with the Maha Vairochana Sand Mandala Puja—an intricate ritual symbolizing the purification and transformation of the universe. Thousands of devotees from the surrounding area visited the monastery to pay their respects. Saga Dawa commemorates the enlightenment and parinirvana of the Buddha, making it a time for deep reflection, compassion, and the accumulation of merit. The sacred month inspires acts of kindness, prayer, and community service in keeping with the Buddha’s teachings.
