Ancient lore in the Malabar region of Kerala is replete with legend of Muthappan. Sree Muthappan is the personification of two glory figures – Vishnu and Shiva. The legend has it, that a childless Brahmin couple Ayyankara Illathu Vazhunnor and his wife Padikutty Amma found a pretty child lying on a flowerbed by the side of a river. They adopted the child as a boon given by Lord Parameswara since t

hey didn’t have a child. As he grew the boy exhibited extraordinary merits of character which were more mysterious than divine to people around him. When his pranks become intolerable, the mother Padikutty Amma told him to leave the house. Sree Muthappan feigned anger and showed his poorna roopam to his mother and left the house. He first went to a place called Kunnathoorpadi and then to Parassinikadavu which later became the existing Aroodam, the permanent abode of Sree Muthappan. The most of striking and unique feature of Sree Muthappan cult is that there is no discrimination, whatever, shown to any devotee, on the basis of cast, creed, colour, language or religion. All are treated equally and hence the temple is built in the essence of “VASUDAIVA KUDUMBAM” means the world is one family.
