Chidambaram Sri Natarajar Temple represents “Ākāshā” Ether and it is one of the Panchabootha shrines of Shiva. Unlike other Shiva temples in India, the shiva is worshipped as Natarajar (The Cosmic Dancer) who is the Moolavar and Utsavar in Chidambaram.

Significantly, the temple has Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver) and Shiva (the destroyer) under single complex.

The dancing lord is worshipped in three aspects - form (Natarajar’s Ananda Thandava), form and formless (Spatika lingam) and formless (Vilva leaves - golden leaves hanging in the wall of inner sanctum).
The temple follows Vedic doctrine of rituals and 6 sessions of Puja (Rituals) are performed to the Spatika Lingam everyday.

From the perspective of devotees

Since my first visit in 2016, I have repeatedly found myself drawn back to Chidambaram whenever I travel to India, especially for Aani Thirumanjanam and Margazhi Thiruvathirai. Over these years, Chidambaram has naturally become the centre around which I plan my pilgrimage and stay, with other sacred Siva Sthalams becoming part of the journey.

My recent Aani Thirumanjanam Darisanam was especially blessed. To witness the grand Ratha Uthsavam and receive the darshan of Peruman in His majestic procession was deeply moving. Standing among the devotees and witnessing that magnificent sight, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude, simply for having been given the opportunity to be there.
