Each one of us has our particular cross to bear, our own karmic burden. We must not bemoan this. It is false notion that because one is a devotee of God, he or she is entitled to a life that is untouched, unruffled, by any difficulties----that we can require of Him that our days be calm and our workload be "not too much, Lord; just what I can carry evenly so that I do not get upset." That is not a realistic expectation. If we tell God, "I am devoting myself to You; therefore it is Your duty to see that my life is happy and that nobody troubles me," we can know for certain that His response will be, "My child, you have much yet to learn. If you are My own, then you have given Me the right to permit whatever is best for you."
Devotees who do so are like the little kitten: The mother cats picks it up and carries it around; she puts it here or puts it there. Whether she places it on a soft cushion or a cold hard surface, the kitten does not cry or whine. The mother is there, so the kitten is content. The Divine Mother of the universe is looking after each one of us in this way. When the devotee says, "Well, Mother, You know best," and has a sweet sense of surrender and trust in Her, he or she is expressing the attitude of a real disciple on the path.
