‘Kallarackal Kadavil' is an ancient and traditional Roman (Syrian) Catholic family in the Central Travancore (also is known as ‘Kadavans’), and it
s origin is at Pallippuram, on the western bank of Vembanad Lake, Cherthala, Alappuzha, Kerala.The original family name is 'Kallarackal', which was a Namboothiri family in the Pallippuram desom/ kara. Thomas, a disciple of Jesus Christ. In the latter century one of the family members had moved and settled down at the western bank/ kadavu of the Vembanadu Lake. He then established a new branch to the original "Kallarackal" family. The new branch was named as ‘Kallarackal Kadavil'. Meaning of Kallarakal Kadavil is 'kallarackal ninnum kadavil thamassam' i.e. some one settled down at kadavil / bank of the lake from the 'Kallarackal' the family. After about 3 generations, some of the ancestors migrated to Vaikom, on the eastern bank of the Vembanad lake, which is now in the Kottayam district. Thus the new branch 'Kallarackal Kadavi'l family was established, flourished and spread in Pallippuram, and then at Vaikom, there after at different parts of Kerala, other states in India and in different countries around the World. Later, the family members were also known as 'Kadavans'
‘Kadavans’ have a family history book which was first published in 1955 by the name "Pallipuram Kallarackal Kadavil Kudumbacharithram', which gives details about our ancestors from the 17th century. The information in this book is recently updated and reprinted and it is published (2nd edition) on May 1st, 2009 during the annual meeting/ kundumbayogam.
'Kadavans' have a family association which started about 75 years ago which is now known as “Kallarackal Kadavil Kudumbayogam”. This association ( kudumbayogam) has an annual get-together every year on May 1st. It is conducted in different house of the family members either in Vaikom or in Pallippuram each year on a rotation basis. All its expenses, which is collected as fixed contributions from every unit family of the male members, will be met by the association. Most of the members, settled down at different places in kerala other states in India and also from aboard come to attend this gathering - Kudumbayogam. The morning session of the 'Kudumbayogam' is usually the general body meeting, where in, the last year’s annual report is submitted and the new office bears for the next year are elected for a 2 year period.. Afternoon sessions consist of will be a variety entertainment session such as sports, quiz, dance, music competition etc and also for other interesting and knowledge enriching competition. Also new members of the family (new born) and the new couples are introduced. Academic and other achievements of the family members will be announced. It is a wonderful and great gathering and it is very helpful to the new and unknown members of the family. They are introduced before the whole gathering and it helps them to know each other and also to become familiar among all the family member
