Revelation Chapter 13:
VIII) 3. Revelation Chapter 13
"The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name." (Revelation 13:1)
Dear holy saints of God, at the beginning of this verse, instead of "And I stood," the original language and several English translations state, "And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea" (NIV). Continuing from the previous verse (Revelation 12:17), the dragon, having set out to wage war against the offspring of the woman—the remaining Bride church left behind—and the 144,000 sealed Israelites, now stands on the sand of the seashore and summons a beast out of the sea. In Revelation 13:11, it summons another beast out of the earth. The dragon shares its power and authority with both of these beasts.
When the dragon, having been cast down from heaven to the earth, stands on the seashore, John sees a vision of a beast emerging from the sea. Approximately 600 years before John, Daniel in his vision saw four beasts coming up out of the sea: a lion, a bear, a leopard, and a indescribably terrifying hybrid beast (Daniel 7:3–8). It was explained to Daniel that these four represented the empires of Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome. As we meditated on how the beast represents consecutive world empires, we must realize that the eighth and final kingdom of the end times is now taking shape.
The "sea" represents the chaotic political and economic circumstances faced by mankind. We saw earlier that the dragon that came to destroy the child of the woman clothed with the sun had seven heads, ten horns, and seven crowns on its heads (Revelation 12:3). Although the beast emerging from the sea also has seven heads and ten horns, ten crowns are now found upon its horns. This reveals an increase in the dominion and authority of the beast. Because the authority and rule of the Antichrist expand significantly in the latter 3½ years compared to his first 3½ years, he will inflict great tribulation during those latter 3½ years. Revelation 11:3–7 further reveals the cruel nature of these latter 3½ years.
Furthermore, John sees blasphemous names written on its heads. In Revelation 17:3, we also observe that the scarlet beast carrying the woman called Babylon had seven heads, ten horns, and was full of blasphemous names. We understand that the seven heads of the beast represent seven great empires that operated in the world. All seven of these kingdoms are historically connected with the nation of Israel. After the dragon is cast down to the earth, his kingdom will operate on earth during the final 3½ years, forming the 8th empire.
"The beast who once was, and now is not, is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction." (Revelation 17:11)
This scripture clearly reveals the divine plan outlined above.
The Seven Empires Connected to Israel:
1. Egypt (1800 BC – 850 BC): Held the Jews in bo***ge and slavery for 400 years.
2. Assyria (850 BC – 606 BC): In 722 BC, Sennacherib conquered and scattered the ten northern tribes (2 Kings 15:16–20; 1 Chronicles 5; 2 Kings 16; Isaiah 7).
3. Babylon (606 BC – 539 BC): Held the remaining two southern tribes in captivity for 70 years (2 Kings 17, 20; 1 Chronicles 9; Jeremiah 25; Daniel 5).
4. Medo-Persia (539 BC – 331 BC): Although the Jews were subject to foreign rule in the days of Ahasuerus and Haman, Kings Cyrus and Darius aided in rebuilding the Temple (Esther, Ezra, Nehemiah).
5. Greece (331 BC – 323 BC): Though Alexander the Great did not persecute the Jews, Antiochus Epiphanes, who arose from his lineage, severely oppressed them (Daniel 8, 9).
6. Rome (323 BC – 476 AD): Not only passed the death sentence of crucifixion upon Christ, but also destroyed the Temple in 70 AD and scattered the Israelites across the world (Luke 21; Daniel 2:31–45; Daniel 7:7–27; Daniel 9:26,27).
7. Revived Roman Empire (Present/Final Days): Formed in these end times, this revived empire will subject Israel to the Great Tribulation (Revelation 12; Daniel 7:21,22; Daniel 8:24,25; Revelation 7:9–17).
