The Srivari Hundi has remained in the same location even though the temple surroundings have undergone changes over the centuries.

According to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, changes were made to parts of the temple complex to make movement easier for pilgrims. Yet, the location of the Srivari Hundi was not shifted.

There is also a traditional belief that a Sri Chakra Yantra is associated with the area beneath the Hundi, adding another layer of reverence to this sacred spot.

Who Built the Tirumala Temple?

The magnificent Tirumala temple was not built by one single ruler.

Its history developed over many centuries, with contributions from several South Indian dynasties, including the Pallavas, Cholas and Pandyas. The Vijayanagara rulers, particularly Sri Krishnadevaraya, also played an important role through their patronage and contributions.

The temple we see today is the result of centuries of devotion, architectural development and royal patronage.

That makes Tirumala more than a temple. It is a living heritage built and preserved across generations.

Today, Tirumala observes the 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐕𝐚𝐫𝐢 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐚 𝐔𝐭𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐦, a traditional celebration connected with the sacred traditions of Sri Andal Ammavari.

As part of this observance, the utsava idols of 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐚 𝐒𝐰𝐚𝐦𝐲 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐢 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐡𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐢 are taken in a divine procession towards Purusaivari Thota.

At the sacred garden, special rituals and offerings are performed near the 𝐏𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐝𝐚 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞, followed by Harati, flower offerings, Sri Shatari and Abhishekam. After the rituals, the divine procession returns towards the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple.

The tradition reflects the rich spiritual heritage of Tirumala, where temple worship, sacred nature and centuries-old Vaishnava traditions come together.

Have you ever wondered about the magnificent golden structure above the main shrine of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala?

Known as the 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐍𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐚 𝐕𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐦, it is one of the most recognizable features of the Tirumala temple. Its history reflects centuries of devotion, craftsmanship and temple tradition.

According to 𝐓𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐓𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐬 (𝐓𝐓𝐃), a wall was constructed around the sanctum and Vimanam between 1244 𝐚𝐧𝐝 1250 𝐀𝐃. Over the centuries, different rulers and devotees contributed to the development and preservation of the temple.

The 𝐕𝐢𝐣𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝 was an important chapter in its history. TTD records state that𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐊𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐍𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐚 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐲𝐚 𝐕𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐦 𝐢𝐧 1518.

The Vimanam was also renovated during the 1950𝐬. New copper sheets were prepared and covered with gold, and the renovated structure was ceremonially consecrated in 1958.

But Ananda Nilayam is more than a golden structure. According to TTD, the Vimanam contains 64 𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐇𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮 𝐦𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 and also features 𝐕𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐤𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐚, a sacred representation of Lord Venkateswara.

Today, the golden Vimanam remains one of the defining symbols of Tirumala. For devotees, it represents the 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡, 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲, 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 that have shaped this sacred temple through the centuries.

One of the first things devotees notice when they have Darshan of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐤𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐚 is the distinctive white Namam adorning His forehead.
