Deer Park Institute

Deer Park Institute Deer Park Institute is a centre for study of classical Indian wisdom traditions. Language courses in Sanskrit and Tibetan are offered on a regular basis.

Deer Park is still a very young centre and the curriculum is being developed gradually. Since opening in March 2006, the Institute has hosted teachings by great masters of all lineages of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as courses and retreats in the Zen and Theravadin traditions. Courses on other classical Indian philosophy, such as Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and Kashmiri Shaivism, are gradually being int

egrated into the program. Apart from the vision of growing into a modern day Nalanda, the vast range of programs offered were also based on the ecumenical tradition, known as Rime in Tibetan. Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche had this to say about the idea behind Deer Park and the Rime tradition:

"Buddha said that at the core of Buddhist practice, three things one should avoid - desire, anger, and ignorance. Rime liberates one from these. The spirit of Rime should not be understood as a sort of new age movement where everything is collected under one roof. Dissolving sectarianism is the quintessence of Rime. Historically, human beings have suffered because of their attachment to their countries, concepts, and especially religions. They become attached even within their particular sect of that religion. This attachment can be expressed as anger towards others or at least a sort of disinterest in the activities of others." "At least between Buddhist sects there has been no bloodshed, only the loss of many great teachings. Buddha's teaching is like a lion's roar, simhanada. The only danger to a lion is decay from within. And to prevent this it is essential for the authentic teachings of the Buddha to be studied and practiced with a vast attitude."

A Journey into the Wisdom of Emptiness

A meaningful eight-day retreat has come to a close, exploring The Five Levels of the Wisdom of Emptiness, based on Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way by Ārya Nāgārjuna, with special emphasis on Chapters 18 and 26.

With the profound guidance of Ven. Geshe Dorji Damdul, participants engaged deeply with the Middle Way teachings, reflecting on emptiness, dependent origination, and the nature of reality.

🙏 May the wisdom and insights gained during these days continue to deepen our understanding, compassion, and inner freedom.

🌿 The Body Beyond Itself came to a beautiful close with an inspiring final sharing.

Over seven days, participants explored the sacred language of gesture, presence, and embodied expression under the guidance of Tabasheer Zutshi. The journey invited them to listen deeply to the wisdom of the body and discover movement as a path of awareness and connection.

The closing session was a heartfelt celebration, where participants shared performances inspired by their learning throughout the workshop. Each presentation reflected not only skill and creativity, but also the personal transformations, insights, and confidence that had blossomed during the week.

Our heartfelt gratitude to Tabasheer Zutshi and to every participant for making this journey so meaningful.

✨ A Beautiful Conclusion to Our Week-long Journey 🌿

Today marked the joyful conclusion of our week-long Kathak & Hindustani Classical Music Workshop at Deer Park Institute.

Over the past week, local and Tibetan children from Kanishka School explored the beauty of Indian classical arts through rhythm, melody, movement, and mindful learning. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and dedication made this journey truly inspiring.

The closing celebration featured heartfelt performances by the students, reflecting all that they had learned, followed by beautiful performances from our teachers, making the occasion even more memorable.

Our heartfelt gratitude to Annu Gupta for guiding the Kathak sessions, and Naman Sharma for leading the Hindustani Classical Vocal Music sessions with such warmth and dedication.

May the seeds of creativity, confidence, compassion, and a lifelong love for the arts continue to grow in every young heart.

Thank you to all the children, parents, teachers, and everyone who made this beautiful journey possible. Until we meet again! 🌸🎶💛
