Shab-e-Barat, also known as Laylat al-Bara’ah, Mid-Shaban, or the Night of Forgiveness, is one of the most spiritually significant nights in Islam. It is observed on the 15th night of Shaban, the eighth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The term “Shab-e-Barat” comes from Persian and Urdu, where Shab means night and Barat means freedom or salvation. This night is seen as a moment of reflection and spiritual preparation for the blessed month of Ramadan.
Muslims across the world, especially in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and parts of the Middle East, observe this night with devotion and reverence. It is widely believed that on this night, Allah’s mercy is especially abundant and that He forgives those who sincerely repent and turn back to Him. Believers spend the night in prayer, seeking forgiveness, making dua, and reflecting on their deeds and intentions. Acts of charity and kindness are also encouraged. In many communities, homes and mosques are illuminated with lamps or lights as a symbol of hope, mercy, and divine blessings associated with this sacred night.
