- Pandavas built the original temple during the Mahabharata era (around 3000 BC).
- Adi Shankaracharya rebuilt the temple in the 8th century AD.
- The temple has withstood several natural disasters, including floods and earthquakes.
- The present structure was built by the Garhwal rulers in the 19th century.

The temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and is considered one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Hinduism.
