His Presence — our lifeline and defense
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, O God.”
— Psalm 42:1 (NIV)
“Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
— 1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)
These words in Psalm 42, written by a son of Korah, echo the cry of a soul that has reached its limit—spiritually dry, emotionally exhausted, physically worn. He was pursued by enemies, overwhelmed by sorrow, and on the edge of giving up. He had come to the end of himself.
But he didn’t surrender.
With the final flicker of strength, he chose to run—not away, but toward something.
Toward the only place where hope remained:
The Presence of the Lord.
In the wilderness, deer pant for water because they are parched—but also because they are pursued. Water isn’t just a source of life; it’s a source of protection. Deer will seek out streams to drink and to wash away their scent, obscuring their trail from predators. In times of danger, the water becomes a refuge.
What a powerful picture this gives us.
Like the deer, we are often chased—by fear, by despair, by temptation, by the enemy of our souls. We long for refreshment, yes—but also for safety. And it is only in the presence of God that we find both.
He revives us—and He hides us.
He strengthens us—and He shields us.
His presence is not just a spiritual “boost”; it is our lifeline and defense.
So if today you feel overwhelmed, pursued, or at the point of collapse, don’t stop. Don’t lie down and give up.
Run.
With whatever strength you have left, run to the water. Run to the One who can both revive you and hide you.
You will find everything you need in His presence.
Prayer:
Lord, I acknowledge that I am vulnerable without You. I feel the weight of life, the weariness of the fight, and the pursuit of the enemy. But I choose to run to You. Quench my thirsty soul and cover me with Your presence. Keep me watchful, strong, and safe in You.
In Jesus' name!
