SACRED SPACES | MAY
The month of May in our calendar brings our attention to the Thana Kushnoor congregation in Karnataka. The late Apostle J. Thomson, then serving as a priest, introduced New Apostolic teachings to the town, marking the start of the congregation in 1971. Shortly afterward, Apostles from Canada visited the area and many faithful received the sacrament of Holy Sealing. On January 31, 1972, twelve men were ordained as priests.
From 1975 to 1978, the congregation held prayers under an old colony tree led by Priest Sharanappa Konge. In 1982, the members united and submitted a petition to acquire land for a church, which was approved by the District Collector's office two years later.
Initially, a small shed was built at the site. This was later expanded to a church in 1995-96, followed by the construction of a compound wall in 1998. Divine Services continued regularly, but as the congregation grew, the church could no longer accommodate all the members. It was thus decided to rebuild the structure.
Rather than completely demolishing the old church, part of the original building was preserved, and the new construction was designed to blend seamlessly with the existing structure. As a result, the aerial view of the church resembles the shape of a cross. The exposed brick architecture, common to the area, gives the building a natural look that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape.
The church was dedicated by then District Apostle Helper David Devaraj on 3rd November 2018. The church comfortably accommodates over 250 members and currently welcomes around 100 to 150 members on a typical Sunday. Due to its spacious design, it also serves as a venue for a variety of other church activities, including District Services, Youth Programs, Choir Practices, and Brothers' Meetings.
