In 1970, Swami Muktajeevan, the spiritual head of the Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan was the first such leader of any of the three Swaminarayan groups to come to the United States and called upon a group of devotees in New Jersey to build a shikhar bandh Temple. After an exhaustive search, a location in Secaucus was secured. His Holiness Acharya Swamishree ceremonially laid the foundation stone on August 29th 1998. The temple was dedicated in August 2001 with a five-day festival of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya.

The 22,500 sq.ft. facility sits on 3.7 acres in a lite industrial zone, accommodating a prayer hall and multi-purpose hall. The layout of the temple has been angled to face east, according the traditional design principles laid down in the ancient scripture, the Vastu Sastra. In accordance with traditional Hindu temples, three huge shikhars, oblong shaped domes, are the main feature of the building. The shikhars are sited directly over where the murtis in the temple are installed. The multi-purpose hall has a 30-foot ceiling and a full-sized stage.

The Swaminarayan sect takes its place in the bhakti tradition: the theological and philosophical base of the movement is Vishistadvaita Vedanta, but upon this foundation certain specific teachings are developed, and the movement comprises several distinct groups which see Sahajanand Swami as the promised incarnation of Purushottam, the Supreme Person, Lord Swaminarayan.
