Weighed in the Balances
"TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting" (Daniel 5:27).

Lady Justice is often depicted wearing a blindfold, holding a set of scales in one hand and a sword in the other. The blindfold signifies that she judges impartially, while the scales tell us that the evidence on both sides of a case will be weighed to reach a verdict. The sword represents her authority to execute the sentence with swiftness and finality.

The evidence against Belshazzar was overwhelming. After living a rebellious life of debauchery, he was "weighed in the balances, and found wanting" (Daniel 5:27). Had he changed course before that fateful night, his story would have ended differently.

Like Belshazzar, we all are "found wanting" when "weighed in the balances" of God's holy law. The Ten Commandments are more than a guide for successful living; they are a mirror to our sinful souls. Says Paul, "I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, 'You shall not covet." (Romans 7:7). Because all of us have coveted (3:23), our only hope for meeting the claims of God's law is through the sinless life and sacrificial death of Jesus. To those who accept His salvation, He promises, "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool" (Isaiah 1:18).

Although Belshazzar forfeited his eternal life, God is incredibly patient with sinners. Jesus even promised a repentant criminal, hanging on the cross next to Him, that he would be in paradise (Luke 23:43). Praise God that "His mercy endures forever"! (Psalm 136).

Thankfully, we do not have to stand before Lady Justice in the judgment. That wouldn't go well for any of us. We face a merciful heavenly Father who "so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). How can we "neglect so great a salvation"? (Hebrews 2:3). Reflect: How does contemplating the sacrifice of Christ give me confidence in my heavenly Father's mercy?
