From our Chaplain, Stephen Griffith:

As the York Minster Encounter Tour 2019 draws to its close, our final journey to the airport is accompanied by the holy son of York, Alcuin, who prayed:

Eternal Light, shine in our hearts;
Eternal Goodness, deliver us from evil;
Eternal Power, be our support;
Eternal Wisdom, scatter the darkness of our ignorance;
Eternal Pity, have mercy upon us;
that with all our heart and mind and soul and strength
we may seek your face
and be brought by your infinite mercy to your holy presence. آمين (Amen).

This morning we joined the local congregation, and pilgrims from across Britain including Oxford, Leeds, and Bradford to share in the mass at Christ Church, Nazareth. We were told in the sermon that our presence there was an act of loving support to the community. We took greetings from our respective churches, including York Minster.

Today we visited the ancient port city of Akko (Acre), touring the Knight's Halls, and exploring the Souk and Templar's tunnels which weave under the city from the seafront to the fortress. This tunnel was only rediscovered in 1994 after a local resident reported a problem with her drainage, and the tunnel was found.
We then visited Rosh HaNikra which is on the border with Lebanon. Here we descended in cable cars to the tunnels which used to connect Lebanon and Israel with a railway which was built by the British in 1942. The tunnel was destroyed by Israel in 1948 because they feared Lebanon would mount an attack using the tunnel. Now it is a tourist attraction, with a small cinema in part of the tunnel, and viewing platforms to watch the waves crash against the rocks in the grottoes.
In both these areas (Akko and Lebanon), Embrace the Middle East have partners they work with to help the people of those regions.
In Acre, they work with the International Christian Committee in Israel, providing youth services to women in there.

In Lebanon, we learned about Embrace's partner Al-Kafaàt. They work with Lebanese children and adults with a wide range of physical and learning disabilities. https://www.embraceme.org/partner/al-kafa%C3%A0t-foundation.

This morning, we shared in the Eucharist on the banks of the Sea of Galilee, at Tabgha, where Jesus was said to have performed the miracle of the loaves and fishes (feeding of the 5000+).
This was followed by visits to some of the local churches and historic sites, including Capernaum, the Church of the Beatitudes, and the Church of the of the Multiplication, which in 2015 was torched by vandals, in an act of 'price-tagging.'

This evening, we shared in a short act of worship. One of our group, Pauline, shared with us this poem from the book 'Being a Priest Today,' by Christopher Cocksworth and Rosalind Brown. The poem is untitled, and it resonated with us, particularly as we are by Galilee, and that we have Encountered elements of this broken world this week.

After worshipping at St. George's this morning, we followed the route of Christ.
Firstly we walked down the Mount of Olives, stopping at Dominus Flevit to look at the view across the Kedron Valley towards Jerusalem. After some short prayers in the church, we continued down to the Garden of Gethsemane, following the road Jesus would have used on Palm Sunday.
After this we entered the old City of Jerusalem by the Jaffa gate, shared lunch together, and had a chance to explore the Old City, before joining thousands of Pilgrims at the Holy Sepulchre.
For those of you thinking the Holy Sepulchre would be a place for quiet contemplation, and ordered Anglican reverence and witness, you would be wrong!
There is frenetic energy, movement and noise everywhere, from pilgrims of all different languages and nations coming together to encounter the place where Jesus was crucified and buried. The crosses carved in to the walls in the pictures below, are from centuries of Armenians leaving a sign of their pilgrimage to this place.

The pilgrims included members of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission, and people from next door back in York, from At. Michael le Belfrey!

This morning we have visited Talitha Kumi School in Beit Jala ( https://www.talithakumi.org/en/home-2/). We learnt about their amazing work educating children from Palestine from kindergarten right up to college level, giving them opportunities to access opportunities they would not necessarily have had before. Here we are up on the roof admiring the views over Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, and even down to the Mediterranean.
