Magdala is a unique Holy Land site with a first century town where the Jewish residents gathered in a synagogue where Jesus visited and taught. DAILY REFLECTION: IT IS YOUR LIGHT THAT SHINES IN MY HEART

Matthew 6:19–23 — “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Today's Gospel is beautiful. Jesus reminds us that all the treasures we possess come from the way we perceive God's gifts—how we receive love, how we recognize the goodness in others, the blessings we receive, our life experiences, the way we trust, and the way we learn to forgive. Even our questions and uncertainties are part of this journey. Our treasure is stored in the heart. The way we receive what comes from the outside determines whether our inner being reflects the light of God's love or remains trapped in self-denial and darkness.

"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness." It is God's light that enables us to see our lives with hope and abundance. We simply need to trust in Him and in His Word of eternal life, which is a Word of love. God is love!

At times, we may not immediately see the fruits of that love when we ask for a miracle, but that is because God has His own timing for everything. Only He knows when His answers are best for you and for me. Through His light, He helps us emerge from the darkness of our minds, where desires for power, revenge, and pride can take hold. Jesus warns us: “If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”

Let us turn on the light within our hearts so that we may discover our true treasure: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

May our hearts be rooted in forgiveness, compassion, kindness, mercy, the joy of simply being, and service to others. May we never grow weary of helping those in need, listening attentively to a suffering brother or sister, sharing our food, visiting the sick, or reaching out to those who are imprisoned or isolated.

Above all, let us recognize that our greatest treasure comes from the love within our hearts. This love is our most precious gift. As we discover our talents and learn to share them with others, the treasure within our hearts shines ever more brightly, illuminating our path and blessing us with a sincere smile, a warm embrace, and a loving gaze that we offer naturally to those around us. For true love is natural. Love that is filled with light has no hidden motives and does not dwell in darkness.

Let us learn to discover the treasures of the heart so that we may be genuine in everything we do and in everything we give.

Today's Resolution: Father, I want Your light to illuminate my darkness so that I may see clearly and share my love with others, always bearing witness to my faith.

DAILY REFLECTION: MY PRAYER IS BETWEEN YOU AND ME

Matthew 6:7–15 — “When you pray, do not keep on babbling.”

Not speaking excessively when we pray, especially so that others may hear us, can be a way of wanting to shout to the world that we know how to pray, that we are very good people because we pray so much. Have you ever heard people pray out loud just so everyone notices? Jesus tells us that this is what pagans do, and also hypocrites, because many times there is nothing in their hearts. They are empty of love. That sounds harsh! Yet, most of the time, it is true.

“They think they will be heard because of their many words,” the Gospel of Matthew tells us. But they will only be heard by those around them!
Prayer, when it is not a communal act such as during Mass, is an act of personal devotion. How so? Because it is between God and you, between Christ and you, between Mary and you. God already knows what you need! And when you ask Him in the intimacy of your prayer, He feels loved by you, by me, by everyone who prays with sincerity and not simply so that others will notice.

Jesus also prayed to His Heavenly Father and taught us a way to love God through prayer. He gave us a model that allows us to be transformed by His compassion, His forgiveness, and His love. This happened when He taught us the Our Father—not so that we would merely recite it from memory, but so that we would feel it in our hearts and, from the heart, allow our prayer to be heard.

Our Father, who art in heaven,�hallowed be Thy name;�Thy kingdom come;�Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.�Give us this day our daily bread,�and forgive us our trespasses,�as we forgive those who trespass against us.�And lead us not into temptation,�but deliver us from evil.

Through this prayer, we surrender our pain, forgive those who have hurt us, ask for protection, honor the Father as our Creator, praise the one true King, ask Him not to abandon us, commit ourselves to accepting His will everywhere, and ask Him to strengthen us so that we may know how to say no to temptation.

And this prayer is for God alone. It is between Him and me. It is a daily discovery of His mercy, which helps us move forward through His love.

Today's Resolution: May my prayer never be vain. May it always be humble, so that You may hear what is in my heart.

Daily Reflection: IN YOUR LOVE I FIND MY PEACE.

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18
“When you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Jesus, in the Gospel of Matthew, presents us with three ways to walk toward holiness. But what does that mean? Well, God wants us to become humble. Yes, He wants us to learn to appreciate the great power we have to help others, so that this life we live may be meaningful, fulfilling, and enriched by our good works.

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness before others to be seen by them,” because the only One who truly matters on the final day is God, and His eyes alone will know what is in our hearts.

When you fast, do not look gloomy as if your sacrifice were greater than that of Jesus on the Cross. Let your fasting be joyful and wholehearted.

When you give alms, do not announce it to everyone. Surely there is someone who gives with even greater generosity, and true goodness is not something to boast about. It is something that is felt deep within the soul. Knowing that even the little we are able to give has been earned through great effort.

And when you pray, let it come from the deepest part of your heart. Let it not be a recitation of empty words that say nothing, words spoken only to appear holy before others.

Anoint yourself! Rejoice! Live!

When you discover the personal value of giving, serving, and forgiving, your life improves. Your happiness grows, and the way you see things changes. You become someone others seek out, someone who recognizes the effort your brother or sister makes to rise from that bed, from that pain, from that anguish. You come to appreciate their life more—and your own as well.

May your humility guide your path so that you may receive God’s healing power in your heart and bear witness that you are truly a child of God.

DAILY REFLECTION: I AM MADE WHOLE IN YOUR LOVE.

Matthew 5:43–48 “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

The perfection of God. How can Jesus ask us to be perfect like our Heavenly Father? Are you perfect? Are your mother and father as perfect as God? Well, we can certainly say that Jesus expects a great deal from each one of us. It is like when He tells us, “Love one another as I have loved you.” These are indeed very high standards for our sinful human nature!

Yet, what do we find in the words of Jesus? Love!

Of course, Jesus trusts us, hopes in us, loves us, and knows that if we truly set our hearts to it, we are capable of loving as He loves us. But what prevents us from doing so? If it were that easy, we would all be living in a happy world, wouldn't we? And that is where this call to God's perfection reaches us. We ourselves block our own happiness because we still do not fully understand what it means to serve. Jesus came into this world to serve us, to give His life for ours, and to teach us forgiveness through His own actions. The moment we grasp the essence of self-giving love, we will begin to understand the true value of happiness. It is in giving that we find ourselves—not in selfishness or in our capacity for wrongdoing. No, it is in simple things such as kindness, forgiveness, and love that we can aspire to the perfection of God.

Let us not be afraid. Welcoming God into our hearts and making Him a part of our lives allows us to begin again. It opens us to the commitment of love that saves us. To follow Christ and live according to God's Word is to receive each new day with gratitude. It is to recognize that our love comes from His love; therefore, it is sacred, it is holy, and we must be willing to make it the purpose of our lives: the love of God.

To be perfect as God is perfect means doing what is ours to do wherever we are. It means not cheating or taking shortcuts that weaken our faith. It means giving the best we have, the best of who we are, and living with the knowledge that the path to our salvation is Jesus on the Cross.

Today's Resolution: I want to do the things I am called to do with joy, with love, and with gratitude to God for never leaving me alone and for giving me the strength to continue my journey in service to others, thus finding the fullness of my love.

DAILY REFLECTION: MAY MY TESTIMONY BE ONE OF LOVE

Matthew 5:38–42 — “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.”

Before the coming of Christ, the law was different. If someone harmed you, it was expected that you would return that aggression. In the Old Testament, while we are taught the Ten Commandments, it was permissible to defend oneself violently, to “get even,” as we commonly say.

But God sends us His beloved Son, and in Him we are born again. Yes, we are given another opportunity to commit ourselves to a life of service, to actions that draw us closer to God, and to directing our emotions toward the common good. Jesus teaches us to forgive—and to forgive sincerely, with love. He helps us realize that when we forgive those who offend us, we ourselves are the ones who benefit the most. We remove a burden from our shoulders: the burden of pain.

Jesus comes to take us by the hand and invite us to walk with Him. He wants us to learn to tolerate one another, to respect one another as God's law commands, and to recognize that we were all created to help each other, to move forward together, and to walk toward salvation. We are made in the likeness of Christ; we have virtues, gifts, and talents that, when developed, open a window to God's blessings.

Jesus tells us: “Do not resist an evil person,” “If anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also,” “If anyone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well,” and “Give to the one who asks you.” And we ask ourselves, How are we going to accomplish this?

With love!

Let us always remember that no matter our conduct, God the Father always loves us, and that when we ask for forgiveness, we draw ever closer to Him.

Today's Resolution: I do not want to be the cause of pain for my fellow brothers and sisters. I do not want to be the evil man. Father, help me to bear witness to love by increasing my faith, so that I may give glory to Your name and to Your Son, Jesus Christ.

REFLECTION OF THE DAY: IT IS YOUR VOICE I WANT TO FOLLOW.

Matthew 9:36—10:8 “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.”

Today's Gospel from Matthew is shouting loudly to us: The laborers are few! We are few! Where are we? We must awaken!

Yes, we must awaken from our comfort, from our laziness, from our depressive and negative feelings, because God's plan includes our happiness, and in that plan there is no time to waste our talents, our virtues, or our gifts.

Jesus tells His disciples that He gives them the power to cast out unclean spirits and to heal diseases. Just as He did for them, He also gives us the power to transform souls, to embrace discouraged hearts, to overcome all kinds of afflictions, and to place at His service our willingness to improve our lives and the lives of others: “Freely you have received this power; freely exercise it.”

Jesus asks us to go and speak about Him. When we hear in the Gospels, “Go and proclaim that the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand,” that is exactly what He means. Jesus wants us to speak of Him because He is the Way. It is through His mercy that we will reach the Kingdom of God, and He wants us to proclaim it, to shout it to the world. It is in our faith that we find the strength to do so. Our faith moves us and, inspired by the Holy Spirit, opens our hearts to understand that Jesus is our Savior.

The laborers are few because it seems that only a small number of us seek this path of love. It appears that our cultural differences are driving us farther apart each day, causing us to neglect the common good and the pursuit of a fulfilling life. Regarding this, Pope Leo XIV tells us: “First and foremost is our relationship with the Lord, cultivating dialogue with Him. Then He will make us His workers and send us into the field of the world as witnesses of His Kingdom.”(Angelus, July 6, 2025)

Let us live by bearing the fruits of love, forgiveness, and understanding that our Lord has sown in each of our hearts.

Today's Resolution: Father of Love, never allow my faith to fade, because I want to work for You, carrying the voice of Christ to every place I go. Strengthen me so that I may never feel that others want to silence that voice. Amen.
