SEFIRAT HA'OMER: TODAY IS 38 DAYS, WHICH ARE FIVE WEEKS AND THREE DAYS OF THE OMER

Counting the Omer

"Blessed are You, HaShem our G-d, King of the universe, Who sanctifies us with His commandments, and commanded us to count the Omer."

23 Iyar: Today is Thirty Eight Days, which are Five Weeks and Three Days of the Omer. (Tiferet within Yesod)

Today without the Holy Temple we are unable to bring the Omer offering. But we are still obligated to count the 49 days of the Omer, which begins on the day of the barley harvest and Omer offering in the Holy Temple, which begins the day following the First day of Passover, and concludes, 49 days later, on the eve of Shavuot. Each evening, at the earliest opportunity, a blessing is made and the Omer is counted.

>"And HaShem spoke to Moshe, saying, Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: When you come to the Land which I am giving you, and you reap its harvest, you shall bring to the kohen an omer of the beginning of your reaping. And he shall wave the omer before HaShem so that it will be acceptable for you; the kohen shall wave it on the day after the rest day [after the Seder night]. And on the day of your waving the omer, you shall offer up an unblemished lamb in its first year as a burnt offering to HaShem; Its meal offering shall be two tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil, a fire offering to HaShem as a spirit of satisfaction. And its libation shall be a quarter of a hin of wine. You shall not eat bread or flour made from parched grain or fresh grain, until this very day, until you bring your G-d's offering. This is an eternal statute throughout your generations in all your dwelling places. AND YOU SHALL COUNT FOR YOURSELVES, from the morrow of the rest day from the day you bring the omer as a wave offering seven weeks; they shall be complete. YOU SHALL COUNT UNTIL THE DAY AFTER THE SEVENTH WEEK, namely, the fiftieth day, on which you shall bring a new meal offering to HaShem." (Leviticus 23:9-16)

"YOU SHALL COUNT SEVEN WEEKS FOR YOURSELF; from the time the sickle is first put to the standing crop, YOU SHALL BEGIN TO COUNT SEVEN WEEKS." (Deuteronomy 16:9)

“May the Merciful One restore unto us the service of the Beit Hamikdash (Holy Temple) place, speedily in our days; Amen, Selah.”

"For the Choirmaster; a song with instrumental music; a Psalm. May G-d be gracious to us and bless us; may He make His countenance shine upon us forever; that Your way be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations. The nations will extol You, O G-d; all the nations will extol You. The nations will rejoice and sing for joy, for You will judge the peoples justly and guide the nations on earth forever. The peoples will extol You, O G-d; all the peoples will extol You, for the earth will have yielded its produce and G-d, our G-d, will bless us. G-d will bless us; and all, from the farthest corners of the earth, shall fear Him." (Psalms 67)

A tradition has grown up alongside the counting of the Omer which involves the assigning of combinations of sefirot (attributes of G-d's relationship to us). These sefirotic combinations involve forty-nine different pairings of the seven lower sefirot, Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod and Malchut.

The sixth week of the counting of the Omer is characterized by the sefirah of Yesod, (Foundation/Righteousness), in combinations with the other six lower sefirot. Day thirty eight of the counting of the Omer is Tiferet - Beauty/Balance/Harmony - within Yesod - Foundation/Righteousness!
