WHAT IS THE WORLD ALLIANCE OF QARA’IM?

The World Alliance of Qara’im (WAQ) is an international organization of independent Karaites established in 2010, committed to steadfastly upholding the principles of Karaism. Unlike other Karaite groups which have, sadly, given themselves over to compromise with the Rabbanites (Rabbis), or engaged in a policy of pandering to the Christians, the WAQ has never – and will never – concede any of the basic tenets of Karaism. These include an unwavering adherence to the straightforward (but not literal!) meaning of the Torah; the rejection of false philosophies such as Pharisaic / Rabbinical Judaism, Christianity / Messianic Judaism, and Western subjective morality; and the belief that, while Hakhamim can be facilitators in helping others understand the Torah, they are not to play the role of dictator or “Pope”. Rather, it is a basic belief of the Karaite movement that each person should “search well in the scriptures and not rely on another’s opinion.” With that in mind, we offer free Karaite / Torah education and activities to all those who are interested.

FAST OF THE FIFTH MONTH (“ASARAH B’AV”) ➠ If you are keeping the Fast of the Fifth Month (see ⁠Zechariah 8:19), the day which commemorates the destruction of Jerusalem and the burning of the House of Yahweh (“Holy Temple”) by King Nebuchadnezzar's Babylonian army in 586 BCE, as recorded in Jeremiah 52:12-14, then it falls on the 10th Day of the Fifth Month, which begins on Friday 24 July 2026 at sunset and ends on Saturday 25 July 2026 at nightfall. (Please note that many Karaites also fast on the 7th day of the Fifth Month, due to a parallel account in Second Kings chapter 25.)

SHOULD WE CELEBRATE TISHA B’AV? ➠ No. There is no mention of the 9th of Av in either Jeremiah chapter 52 or Second Kings chapter 25. The Rabbis most likely chose this date because it had previously been considered a day of bad luck. (See, for instance, Mishnah Ta'anit 4:6.)
