Custodia Terræ Sanctæ

Custodia Terræ Sanctæ We are a group of Christian men who have been called by God from every corner of the world for a special mission: to watch over His house!
(449)

We belong to a religious Order in the Catholic Church, the Order of Friars Minor, the Franciscans. Drawn by love of the poor and crucified Christ, our founder, Saint Francis of Assisi, went to the Middle East at the beginning of the 13th century, in order to “touch” the places which, up to our day, offer an irreplaceable testimony to God’s revelation and to God’s love for the human person. During

his pilgrimage, and despite the Crusades, Saint Francis encountered and dialogued with the sultan Melek al-Kamel, who was governing the Holy Land at the time. It was a peaceful encounter, which marked the beginning of the Franciscans’ presence in the Holy Land and also influenced the way in which we have been present in the course of the centuries until today. Over the course of time, this province of the Franciscan Order took the name “Custody of the Holy Land”. Saint Francis and the Franciscans always had at heart the love of the Incarnation of Jesus, and that is why they have loved the Holy Land since the beginning. For there is no Incarnation without a place. For us, loving this land means to love Jesus. And we cannot think of Jesus without loving His land. Because of the Franciscans’ special attachment to the Gospel of Jesus and to his Incarnation, our Catholic Church entrusted to us the mission of preserving the places of our salvation. There are concrete ways of watching over the holy places: animating the holy places for the pilgrims and the local Churches by means of the liturgy, welcoming the pilgrims who come from every part of the world in order to pray and to become recollected, and preserving the structures of these places. Local Christian communities live alongside the holy places. The local communities are made up of parishes of different Catholic rites and traditions (Western and Eastern). We Franciscans have the responsibility for various parishes whose heart and whose seat are in the holy places. Loving the stones that preserve the memory of Jesus also pushes us to love the living stones, the Christian communities who, throughout the centuries, live here. The Custody has many formative and social activities, which aim at supporting the Christian presence in the Holy Land: running schools, constructing housing, helping people who suffer from various forms of poverty. A spiritual guide and guesthouses are available for the Christian pilgrims who come from every part of the world, as well as the guarantee and the grace of being able to celebrate the mysteries of salvation in the holy places. To conclude: We are a fraternity of the Order of Friars Minor living in the Holy Land, who preserve, study and render the places where the Christian faith originated welcoming and proclaim the marvels of the love of the Most High Almighty and Good Lord who for our sake took on our humanity for the salvation of all people.

The Chrism Mass at Gethsemane in Jerusalem

On Wednesday, June 17, the Chrism Mass was celebrated at the Basilica of the Agony on the Mount of Gethsemane, the place where Jesus prayed, experienced the most painful moments of his passion, and was arrested.
The Chrism Mass is an annual gathering of the Bishop with his clergy and the faithful, and in Jerusalem as well, the Latin Patriarch celebrated it as a sign of communion with the entire Church. It is usually held on Holy Thursday, the same day as the In Coena Domini liturgy, at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Cathedral of Jerusalem.
This year, due to the conflict that has affected the Holy Land in recent months and the resulting ban on public gatherings, it was not possible to celebrate this moment on the usual date, and the decision was made to postpone it to today.

The climax of the celebrations was reached on the morning of June 13th with the Solemn Mass, presided over by Friar Francesco Ielpo. In a historical moment marked by fear and uncertainty, the Custos asked Saint Anthony to grant the faithful the hope and strength to build bridges of peace throughout the world: "Today we ask our patron saint for a special grace: to help us drive out the demons that divide nations, our communities, our families, and our hearts. May he teach us to speak the new language of the Gospel. May he make us men and women capable of standing amidst the wounds of history just like Christ: not to condemn, but to reconcile."

Jerusalem, Solemn Vespers for the Feast of St. Anthony and the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The first vespers of the Solemnity of St. Anthony were held on Friday, June 12, on the same day that the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was celebrated.
The Vespers were presided over by the Father Custos, Fr. Francesco Ielpo, who blessed and distributed the Bread of St. Anthony, as per tradition - a simple yet powerful gesture. In his homily, the Custos stated: “The Heart of Christ reveals to us a God who is moved, a God who loves, a God who does not remain distant from human affairs, but who enters into our history to the point of sharing our frailty and our suffering.”

The Custody of the Holy Land celebrates the Italian Republic Day

This year too, the Custody of the Holy Land wished to pay tribute to the Italian Republic with a solemn Eucharistic celebration in Jerusalem, on the occasion of the Italian national holiday which falls on June 2.
According to a well-established tradition, the Holy Mass is celebrated on the Sunday closest to the date on which Italy commemorates the institutional referendum of 1946 which marked the birth of the Republic.
This year, however, the coincidence with other liturgical celebrations on May 31 suggested postponing the appointment to the following Sunday, thus allowing for a wider participation of the faithful.
