Parish of Newcastle & Newtownmountkennedy

Parish of Newcastle & Newtownmountkennedy We are a Church of Ireland parish in Co.Wicklow Welcome to the Parishes of Newcastle & Newtownmountkennedy with Calary, in east Co. Wicklow.

We are part of a growing community situated in a rural area but within the Dublin commuter belt. There are three churches in the two parishes and also St. Francis primary school at Newcastle. We belong to the Church of Ireland Diocese of Dublin & Glendalough, a part of the world wide Anglican/Episcopalian communion with some 70 million members in 164 different countries. We welcome you to worship with us if you are visiting or coming to live in the area, irrespective of your religious affiliation or none. We are an inclusive, ecumenical and friendly parish with people of all age groups and backgrounds. We cherish the broad nature of Anglican belief and worship which is both Catholic and Reformed. We seek to spread the Gospel message of the forgiveness and love of God and neighbour. We look to deepen our faith and serve God through our worship, activities, and outreach to both the local and world wide community through practical service and financial support.

To everyone receiving their Leaving Certificate results today, may you know God's love and His guidance as you navigate your way.

Whether the path you take is how you imagined, or now looks a little different, may God’s word light your way. May you be secure in the knowledge that your family, friends, and community are here to support you.

Also please remember that your hopes, dreams and aspirations may change and you will find your place in the world and a way to achieve it. While today is an important day, it most certainly does not define who you are or your path in life.

We are all here to help and support you as you begin to navigate the next part of your journey. Wishing you all every blessing for the future.
God bless, Ross

Please join us on Wednesday, 19th August in St Matthew’s Church at 8 pm for a talk by our diocesan lay minister Caroline Tindal, entitled ‘The potted history of St Matthew’s Church’

St. Matthew’s Church stands at the heart of Newtownmountkennedy as one of its most enduring heritage landmarks, a quiet yet powerful testament to the village’s long and layered past. Built in the early nineteenth century, the church reflects the architectural character and spiritual life of a community that has grown, changed, and thrived around it for generations. Its elegant stone façade, framed by mature trees and the rolling Wicklow landscape, offers a sense of continuity in a town that has seen remarkable transformation.

Stepping inside St. Matthew’s, visitors are met with a warm, contemplative space shaped by centuries of worship and local memory. The timbered roof, the soft light filtering through stained‑glass windows, and the simplicity of its interior design speak to a tradition of craftsmanship rooted in both practicality and devotion. Every feature—from the carved pulpit to the memorial plaques—carries echoes of the people who gathered here, marking life’s milestones and weaving their stories into the fabric of the parish.

Today, St. Matthew’s Church remains a cherished symbol of local history—an architectural anchor, a spiritual refuge, and a cultural touchstone. Its presence invites reflection, appreciation, and a renewed sense of belonging for all who pass through its doors.

The talk is free but please book a space, for catering purposes!

Thank you!

Today is the National Day of Commemoration, when we remember all the Irish men and women who lost their lives in past and current wars and while serving on United Nations peacekeeping missions.

It is also Sea Sunday, when we remember and pray for those in peril on the sea. We pray for all those men and women who ensure the supply of our food, oil and other goods on which we depend, for those who harvest the bounty of the sea.

O Lord, God of the heavens, the earth, and the deepest oceans,
we lift up our hearts today in gratitude and prayer for those who dedicate their lives to the service of others, and for those whose callings take them far from home upon the vast and unpredictable waters.

We ask for Your hand of protection over the men and women of our defence forces, and give thanks for all Irishmen and Irishwomen who have served throughout the ages . Be with them in the face of danger. Watch over their families. Let their dedication always pave a path towards a true and lasting peace in our world

We pray for the mariners, the fishermen, and all who labour upon the great deep. The sea is vast, and its power reminds us of our own smallness. When the storms rage and the waves swell, be their anchor and their safe harbour. Guide them safely through perilous waters and bring them back to their home shores and the embrace of their loved ones.
May Your presence be a constant shield for those on land, in the air, and across the waves. Give them strength for the day, peace for the night, and the comfort of knowing they are never far from your love.
Amen.
