Last night Archbishop Jackson stated that there is wisdom now in suspending public worship in parish churches. Accordingly there will be no Sunday Services in Nun's Cross Church until further notice.
However, a few of us will gather on Sundays at 11 am and live stream worship directly to this page. You will be able to access the service either live or see it later at your leisure.

A list of vulnerable people in the area is being complied. If you know of anyone who should be added please contact Rev Ken Rue, [email protected] or 087 2766590. He has received offers of help to do the likes of shopping and picking up prescriptions. If you can help please contact him. Stay safe and look out for your neighbours.

ECO TIPS — LITTER
April saw the An Taisce national spring clean, where veritable armies of volunteers collected litter – and doesn’t everywhere look the better for it! The sheer volume and variety of litter / dumping defies belief. Towns, villages, school and sports grounds, housing estates, shopping precincts, rural roads, beaches, mountains – nowhere is exempt. The litter clean-up is a fantastic initiative, as is Wicklow’s Pure Mile project, but it is a sad reflection of today’s society that it is even necessary and, furthermore, that littering has become so universally rampant. Schools/colleges could try to eliminate littering on their campuses so that litter collection is not needed; the provision of plenty of litter bins is essential to achieve this. If people see how much more attractive litter-free areas are, then they may get into the habit of taking litter home with them. This applies to all age groups, from all walks of life and includes pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike. We can all pick up litter as we see it and we can all influence those around us not to throw rubbish on the ground, not so much as a sweet wrapper.

VISIT OF CANON HATEM SHEHADEH
Canon Hatem Shehadeh from Haifa in the Diocese of Jerusalem visited Dublin & Glendalough from 21 to 26 May as part of the partnership link between the two dioceses. He shared his experiences as a Christian, Arab, Palestinian, Israeli, Irish Anglican minister living in the Land of the Holy One. His mother-in-law comes from Fermanagh and he holds Irish citizenship.
He addressed both clergy and lay people in the Church of Ireland Theological Institute. He attended the Ministry of Healing Eucharist in Christ Church Cathedral, followed by lunch with Our Table, a refugee initiative. He was at the Thinking Allowed event in the Holy Cross Diocesan Centre, Clonliffe Road, Dublin 3 and was in St John’s Church, Laragh, for Evening Prayer.
Canon Hatem talked movingly about the situation of Christians in his home country and his insistence that they must not stop believing the message of peace, witnessing to the Lord and spreading the good news and the message of peace and reconciliation.

Canon Hatem has asked Christians in the west to do three things:
1.Push back against the demonisation of both Palestinians and Israelis.
2.Reject the support of violence. It is not Christian.
3. Support those who are seeking peace. “We don’t need you to be pro- Palestinian or pro–Israeli. Be pro–peace”.

Canon Hatem is involved in a schools-based peace project which brings together Jews, Moslems and Christians. He visited Nun’s Cross NS and East Glendalough NS and spoke of this initiative. In Nun’s Cross NS, he taught the children some Arabic and Hebrew words. One child asked him what the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis was about. He gave a wonderful illustration: “Here is a watch. One persons say that my father gave it to me and another that my great-great-great-great grandfather gave it to me”. There are two stories which lead to conflicting views.

ECO TIPS—GARDENING WITHOUT CHEMICALS / WITH KINDNESS
Following the exceptionally cold, wet spring, many people are frantically trying to catch up in their gardens by tidying, sowing and planting – a useful short-cut is to visit a garden centre and buy some of the myriad flower and vegetable plants on display. Additionally, however, you may well be greeted by an overwhelming array of pesticides and sprays, all full of chemicals and all with the express aim of killing plants or animals that are perceived to be pests. Think carefully if they really are essential before buying any. Does it matter if moss grows in your lawn? In areas where wet, slippery moss on tarmac or concrete could pose a hazard, try using detergent powders, less noxious than other moss killers. W**d killers often do not have long-lasting effects and need repeat sprayings. In the time spent spraying, the area could have been weeded. The old-fashioned hoe is a very useful tool! Slug pellets are toxic to many bird species, so try using organic pellets, slug traps filled with coffee or beer, or spreading bran or crushed baked egg shell around delicate plants. Spray diluted washing up liquid if you need to kill aphids or, better still, use ladybirds. Treat your garden kindly. Sow three times the number of seeds you need, one each for the larder, the weather and birds/other animals.

ECUMENICAL BIBLE WEEK
Ecumenical Bible Week is now in its fifth year and runs from Pentecost Sunday (20th May) to Trinity Sunday (27th May). Rev Ken Rue co-chairs this week together with Fr Kieran O’Mahony. This year’s theme is “Handing on Faith: Crisis, Challenge and the Great Commission” and the key verse is “I handed on to you what I myself received (1 Corinthians 11: 23).
The Church of Ireland involvement in the week’s events is significant. Archbishop Jackson is one of the panellists at the Thinking Allowed session on Thursday 24thin Holy Cross Diocesan Centre, Clonliffe. He will be joined by Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh and three married couples. The discussion will focus on the question: “What have we from our experience discovered about living and passing on the faith?” The panel will be chaired by DCU Chaplain, Philip McKinley and there will be an opportunity for audience participation.

During the week there will be talks in 10 different places. Local venues and topics included are:
Arklow, St Saviour’s Hall, Tuesday 22nd @ 8pm – Can we share our faith without being annoying?
Greystones, St Patrick’s Hall, Wednesday 23rd @ 7.30pm - Our special way of talking about God

A full programme of events may be seen at www.bibleweek.ie or go to Facebook https://www.facebook.com/bibleweekie

VISIT OF CANON HATEM SHEHADEH
As part of the link with the Diocese of Jerusalem, Canon Hatem Shehadeh from Haifa, Israel will be visiting Nun’s Cross School and East Glendalough School on Friday 25th May. Canon Hatem is involved in a schools’ peace project in Haifa.

ASCENSION DAY PRAYER
O God, whose blessed Son,
our great high priest,
has entered once for all into the Holy Place
and ever lives to intercede on our behalf:
grant that we,
sanctified by the offering of his body
may draw near with full assurance of faith
by the way which he has dedicated for us
and evermore serve you, the living God;
through the same your Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with thee,
O Father, and the Holy Spirit,
one God, world without end. Amen.

ECO TIPS — STORMY TIMES
Ex-hurricane Ophelia, Storm Brian …… although Wicklow escaped relatively
lightly, other parts of the country did not fare so benignly. Those two
recent storms, in quick succession, were a violent reminder to us all that
we are not immune to the effects that climate change is wreaking on our
world. For sure, storms have always occurred, but their frequency and
ferocity are increasing. Nearly every day we hear about some aspect of the
detrimental effect humans are having on the world — sea level rise,
increaSing sea and global air temperatures, ocean acidity, acid rain, plastic
rubbish mountains and soon. We cannot stop these changes but we can» -
slow down‘the speed at which they occur, but ONLY If everyone makes a concerted effort to reduce our impact on the environment. We could all try to minimise our use of resources.

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE . Together with the Revd. William Olhausen, Ken Rue is leading a diocesan group on a pilgrimage to Jordan, Palestine and Israel from 3rd 14th Nov.
Twenty-eight people are travelling and will not only visit the holy sites but interact with local Christians and others to gain an insight into what life is like in the Middle East from religious and political standpoints.

Archbishop Jackson has written the following prayer for the Diocese of Jerusalem which you might like to pray:
God
throughout human history
you have heard the cry of your people
when they turn to you for help and healing,
for merciful belonging and for new life.
Bless those who today tend the flame of witness
to your kindly presence
in the Land of The Holy One.
Give grace and protection
to the bishop, the clergy and people
in the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem and the Middle East
who heed your command
to love God and neighbour
with courage and with generosity.
Bless those who in the United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough
build partnership; solidarity and friendship
with the peoples of The Middle East
at this time of harrowing and of hope.
We ask this in the name of God
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Amen

Eco Tips
Hopefully all parishioners went to see the recent flower festival in Nun's
Cross - visitors quickly ran out of superlatives to describe the magnificence
and beauty of the arrangements in the Church: they were beyond
compare. People really loved those flowers. So why not take positive steps
to recreate some floral beauty on your own doorstep. If you live in a village
or town, you could join Tidy Towns and help plant flowers as well as clean
up vegetation and litter. No matter where you live, you could plant up
hanging baskets, window boxes, outdoor pots, flowers at your gate. Now is
a good time to plant daffodil and other flower bulbs and then next spring
the results are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face as well as your neighbours’.

PRAYER
God of all seasons, we thank you for Autumn.
Me thank you for the touch of coolness in the air
that gives us a new burst of energy,
or the colouring of trees that shows the creativity of the Divine Artist.
for the falling leaves that reveal the strength of the branches.
for the hues of fields that bring peace to our souls.
for the smiles on pumpkins that bring joy to children.
for the harvest which brings us gratitude for the bounty of our land.
for this change of seasons that reveals the circle of life.
God of all seasons, as you transform the earth, transform us by your Spirit.
Amen.
