ROTAS
We need more help with cleaning the church and arranging flowers for the church and with organising tea/coffee for the end of services. We are very grateful to those who help the church in this way but would like to spread these tasks more widely. Rotas are posted on the church notice board in the porch and beside the font. Please sign up if you can!
ECO TIPS—GARDENING WITHOUT CHEMICALS / WITH KINDNESS
Following the exceptionally cold, wet spring, many people are frantically trying to catch up in their gardens by tidying, sowing and planting – a useful short-cut is to visit a garden centre and buy some of the myriad flower and vegetable plants on display. Additionally, however, you may well be greeted by an overwhelming array of pesticides and sprays, all full of chemicals and all with the express aim of killing plants or animals that are perceived to be pests. Think carefully if they really are essential before buying any. Does it matter if moss grows in your lawn? In areas where wet, slippery moss on tarmac or concrete could pose a hazard, try using detergent powders, less noxious than other moss killers. W**d killers often do not have long-lasting effects and need repeat sprayings. In the time spent spraying, the area could have been weeded. The old-fashioned hoe is a very useful tool! Slug pellets are toxic to many bird species, so try using organic pellets, slug traps filled with coffee or beer, or spreading bran or crushed baked egg shell around delicate plants. Spray diluted washing up liquid if you need to kill aphids or, better still, use ladybirds. Treat your garden kindly. Sow three times the number of seeds you need, one each for the larder, the weather and birds/other animals.
ECUMENICAL BIBLE WEEK
Ecumenical Bible Week is now in its fifth year and runs from Pentecost Sunday (20th May) to Trinity Sunday (27th May). Rev Ken Rue co-chairs this week together with Fr Kieran O’Mahony. This year’s theme is “Handing on Faith: Crisis, Challenge and the Great Commission” and the key verse is “I handed on to you what I myself received (1 Corinthians 11: 23).
The Church of Ireland involvement in the week’s events is significant. Archbishop Jackson is one of the panellists at the Thinking Allowed session on Thursday 24thin Holy Cross Diocesan Centre, Clonliffe. He will be joined by Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh and three married couples. The discussion will focus on the question: “What have we from our experience discovered about living and passing on the faith?” The panel will be chaired by DCU Chaplain, Philip McKinley and there will be an opportunity for audience participation.
During the week there will be talks in 10 different places. Local venues and topics included are:
Arklow, St Saviour’s Hall, Tuesday 22nd @ 8pm – Can we share our faith without being annoying?
Greystones, St Patrick’s Hall, Wednesday 23rd @ 7.30pm - Our special way of talking about God
A full programme of events may be seen at www.bibleweek.ie or go to Facebook https://www.facebook.com/bibleweekie
VISIT OF CANON HATEM SHEHADEH
As part of the link with the Diocese of Jerusalem, Canon Hatem Shehadeh from Haifa, Israel will be visiting Nun’s Cross School and East Glendalough School on Friday 25th May. Canon Hatem is involved in a schools’ peace project in Haifa.
ASCENSION DAY PRAYER
O God, whose blessed Son,
our great high priest,
has entered once for all into the Holy Place
and ever lives to intercede on our behalf:
grant that we,
sanctified by the offering of his body
may draw near with full assurance of faith
by the way which he has dedicated for us
and evermore serve you, the living God;
through the same your Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with thee,
O Father, and the Holy Spirit,
one God, world without end. Amen.

Ecumenical Bible Week is an exciting and successful venture which is now in its fifth year. It includes parish-based events around Dublin and surrounding areas. There'll be debate, talks, music and (we hope) lots of participation.
