Westport Eco-Congregation

Westport Eco-Congregation Local environmental group In the Westport area our response to 'Care of Creation' is to gather to respond.

The Westport Congregation has united since the publication of ‘Laudato si' (Italian for ‘Praise Be to You’) encyclical of Pope Francis, subtitled ‘On Care For Our Common Home’ in it, the Pope critiques consumerism and irresponsible development, laments environmental and global warming and calls all people of the world to take "swift and unified global action”. Our vision is to see local community churches adopt an eco-approach to worship, lifestyle, property, finance management, community outreach and contact with the developing world. We aim to achieve the national Eco-Congregation Award in 2017. This will be the project lead while collaborating with other local groups in the area. We met once a month in Carrowbeg House, The Mall, Westport, County Mayo. Our areas of interest are: Worship and Teaching, Children’s and Youth Work, Property and Grounds Management, Finance and Waste, Personal Lifestyles, Working with the Local Community and Thinking Globally. The Season of Creation runs from 1 September to 4 October and is an opportunity for Christians around the world to come together in prayer, reflection and action to care for creation.

This year’s theme is ‘Living Water’ 💧

‘Where the river flows, everything will live.’
Ezekiel 47:9

In Ezekiel’s vision, water flows from the Temple into a landscape in need of renewal.

As we look at places damaged by pollution, drought and environmental degradation, Ezekiel offers a vision of hope and the possibility of renewal.

Creator God,
let your living water flow through places of suffering and loss.
Bring healing to damaged lands and waters, renewal to threatened ecosystems and hope to communities facing environmental change.
Help us to become part of your work of restoration.

Amen.

Today, we offer gratitude for water. Every time you use water today, consider the ways it is important to all life, and what we can each do to take care of the water in our world.

💧🌿 SEASON OF CREATION 2026: LIVING WATER

On 1 September, Christians around the world begin the Season of Creation, a time of prayer, reflection and action for our common home. The season runs until 4 October, the Feast of St Francis of Assisi.

This year’s theme is “Living Water”, inspired by Ezekiel 47:1–12. We are invited to imagine God’s life-giving river flowing into places of drought and destruction, restoring ecosystems, renewing communities and bringing life wherever it goes. 🌊

The theme calls us not only to pray for creation, but to immerse ourselves in the work of healing it.

💧 How can you celebrate?

🌱 Pray by holding a prayer service, blessing of the waters or reflection on Ezekiel 47.

🚰 Protect water by learning about the rivers, wetlands, coastlines and water systems in your community and taking action to protect them.

🌿 Restore by organising a river, wetland, beach or community clean-up or restoration activity.

🤝 Gather by bringing churches, schools, communities and environmental groups together around a shared commitment to care for creation.

📣 Speak up by advocating for clean, accessible water and climate justice, especially for communities most affected by water scarcity, pollution and climate change.

💚 Make a commitment by choosing one practical action you can take throughout the Season of Creation and inviting others to join you.

This September, let’s step into the river. Let’s allow living water to flow through our prayers, our communities and our actions.

🌊 Living Water. Living Creation. Living Hope.
