Today, the 29th of June is the Feast of St. Peter and Paul and it was on this day growing up that my mother in Wexford would always ‘root’ the first spuds. Many people followed this rule and this was day you’d have a taste of the early spuds. Nothing as nice a few new spuds in their skins with butter and salt and a glass of milk.

There were also bonfires on this day around the country and here in Wexford I’ve recorded men who remembered them. It was also the big social day at Castleboro House (near Enniscorthy) and again, the older locals remembered looking forward to this day as children.

For me it was always looking forward to a few spuds and I’ll make it my business to get a few into me today. The day also registers with me as it was the date the mother died and that would be hanging around somewhere at the back of your head too.

It’s like this, calendar dates are important to us in Ireland, whether it’d be for digging a few spuds to lighting a candle for the returning souls, and I’d hate to see us loosing them and replace them with things like Black Friday and soulless sh*te like that.

So there you have it, eat a few new spuds this evening. You can’t go wrong.

Waterford are All Ireland Minor Hurling champions for the first time since 2013 and a fourth time ever!

They proved just far too strong for their Clare opponents and such was the excitement the referee blew up early as they couldn't keep the Waterford supporters off the pitch such was their excitement in injury time.

Final score Waterford 1-18 Clare 0-10
