Beware of the Disease of Satan (Devil): Arrogance!

“No one who has an atom’s weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.”

A man said, “A man likes his clothes and shoes to look good.”

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Indeed, Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on people.”

“The arrogant will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection like tiny ants in the forms of men, with humiliation surrounding them from every direction. They will be driven to a prison in Hell called Bawlas, where the fiercest fire will rise over them. They will be given the discharge of the inhabitants of Hell to drink—the foul fluid known as Tinat al-Khabal.”

Al-Asma‘i reported:

Khalid ibn Yazid was asked, “What is the nearest thing?”
He replied, “One’s appointed time of death.”

He was asked, “What is the farthest thing?”
He replied, “One’s hopes.”

He was asked, “What offers the greatest grounds for hope?”
He replied, “Good deeds.”

The Will Before It Is Too Late: Hasten to Write It..!
The Importance of a Will in Islam: Preserving Rights and Preparing to Meet Allah.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“It is not right for a Muslim who has something to bequeath to spend two nights without having his will written and kept with him.”

Narrator: Abdullah ibn Umar
Hadith scholar: Al-Bukhari
Source: Sahih al-Bukhari
Hadith No.: 2738
Grading: Sahih (Authentic)
Also narrated by Muslim (1627) with slightly different wording.

Allah, the Almighty, has prescribed the will out of kindness and mercy towards His servants. He has allowed a Muslim to bequeath a portion of his wealth before his death for charitable and righteous causes that benefit others, while bringing reward and recompense to the person making the will.

In this hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) strongly encourages Muslims to hasten to write their wills before death comes unexpectedly. He explained that it is not appropriate for a Muslim—whether a man or a woman—who has matters that need to be addressed in a will, such as wealth, young children, rights owed to them or obligations they owe to others, including debts, expiations (kaffarah), or unpaid Zakah, to allow two nights or more to pass without having these matters written down and the will kept safely.

When such matters are included in the will, debts are settled from the estate before its distribution, while other valid bequests are generally fulfilled from up to one-third of the estate.

The reference to a “Muslim” in the hadith serves to strongly encourage the believer to hasten to comply with this Prophetic guidance and emphasises the importance of the matter.

It was also narrated by Al-Darimi and Al-Daraqutni from Anas that they used to make their wills in words similar to the following:

“This is what so-and-so, son of so-and-so, has instructed in his will: He bears witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger; that the Hour is certainly coming, about which there is no doubt; and that Allah will resurrect those who are in the graves.

“He advises the family he leaves behind to fear Allah, to reconcile and maintain good relations among themselves, and to obey Allah and His Messenger if they are believers.

“He advises them with the same instruction that Ibrahim gave to his sons, and Ya‘qub:

‘O my children! Indeed, Allah has chosen for you this religion, so do not die except in a state of submission to Him.’
[Al-Baqarah 2:132]

“And he further states that, should he die as a result of this illness, his instructions and needs are such-and-such.”

Lessons from the Hadith

The hadith encourages Muslims to write their wills.

It also teaches us that important matters should be documented in writing, because written records are more reliable than relying solely upon memory, which can often fail.

It further encourages us to prepare for death before it is too late, because no one knows when death may suddenly come upon them.

Al-Hasan Al-Basri said:

“I have never seen a certainty in which there is no doubt resemble something treated with such doubt and uncertainty as death.”

Some scholars considered it appropriate to begin the Islamic calendar with the Hijrah, and one of them said:‎
‎“The events that occurred in the life of the Prophet ‎ﷺ‎, which could potentially have been used as the starting point for dating, were four: his birth, his mission, ‎his Hijrah, and his death.‎
They considered it preferable to begin the calendar with the Hijrah because both his birth and the beginning of his prophetic mission are subject to disagreement ‎regarding the exact year in which they occurred.‎
As for the time of his death, they avoided using it because mentioning it would naturally evoke sorrow and grief over his passing. Thus, the choice was narrowed ‎down to the Hijrah.‎
They chose Muharram rather than Rabiʿ al-Awwal, because the initial decision and determination to migrate took place in Muharram. The pledge of allegiance ‎had taken place during Dhul-Hijjah, and that pledge was a precursor to the Hijrah. Therefore, the first new moon to appear after the pledge and the decision to ‎migrate was the new moon of Muharram. It was therefore appropriate to make Muharram the beginning of the calendar.‎
This is the strongest explanation I have found for the appropriateness of beginning the Islamic calendar with Muharram.‎
Al-Hakim narrated from Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib, who said:‎
‎‘ʿUmar gathered the people and asked them about the day from which they should begin recording the calendar. ʿAli said: “From the day when the Messenger of ‎Allah ‎ﷺ‎ migrated and left the land of polytheism.” So ʿUmar adopted this proposal.’‎
This is the summary of the narration.”‎
